Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not use if you get snow. I installed my deck waited 3 months for it to dry fully and shift as new decks should before staining or painting. I purchased the stain read the directions and made my husband read it too. Prior to finishing we re-tightened screws lightly sanded to remove the roughness and any sap that comes out when drying. Checked weather reports and then stained. It went on beautifully and looked so attractive, I was delighted with the results until a year later when anywhere snow was on the deck the stain peeled and flaked off. After one (1!) winter with nobody out there on it, it has peeled off everywhere. I contacted Thompson, and they offered me a refund for the price of the product if I still had the receipt (I don't). The peeling sealant is now a bigger mess than if I had used nothing and just left my deck bare. It looked very good, but I wanted 2 seal it, so it won't turn grey. Have had a very busy summer, but got 2/3rds of the job done on the wknd. It looks even better than before. The wood colour is more vibrant, the knots jump out. Very pleased. As long as the sealer holds up well, I couldn't be more pleased. Is Thompson Water Seal worth it?Thompson's WaterSeal has clearly not been a consumer favorite with deck stains or sealers. Mainly as it does not offer any UV protection and it grays in a few months. The Transparent and Semi-Transparent versions are prone to premature peeling and wearing after about 1 year.
