Jeep wrangler clicking noise when opening door

I'm new to the forum and am looking for advice on this issue. There is a fast, loud clicking noise, possibly from behind the dashboard, which lasts several seconds, when I open the door of my 2016 Jeep Patriot. The engine is not running and the doors are not locked, and there was no difficulty opening the door or starting the engine. This just started one day ago and is happening frequently but not every time when the driver side front door is opened (engine not on) and happened once when the passenger front door was opened. It also happened one time when I was driving and coming to a stop at the end of my street. I have seen a lot of posts about clicking noises but not exactly the same as my situation. Any advice would be appreciated.

Going just on what you've said, IMO it's either a bad actuator in the HVAC system (there are three of them) or the HVAC control module is failing and not shutting off one of actuators when it's reached it's limit.

Sounds like a HVAC actuator to me too. I would hear a loud clicking when entering my Pat too when my blend door actuator was dying. If you sit in there for about 5 minutes after you turn the car off you'll probably hear it too.

Thanks for your response. I will look into it.

Thanks! I will check it out.

Hi all,

I have a problem with my 2014 GC. When I open any of the doors I get a clicking noise from behind the dash. This also happens when starting the jeep. It happens also when I change the air from the windshield to anywhere else.

The hot and cold air is working fine on both sides of the jeep. I have been reading that it could be the blend doors so I took apart the dash and had a look. It doesn't appear to be the lower actuator but the higher one. I have come to this conclusion by placing my hand on it when starting the engine a feeling it clicking. I have no idea what the higher one is.

Does anyone have any idea on how to attack this? I cannot seem to get anywhere near the torx screws like I can with the lower one.

Yep. It's one of the motors.

You need a Lilliputian to get those things out!

I changed two of them, on my 2006 SRT Charger and swore I'd never do it, again.

Patience is a virtue...

Good news is that all 3, or 4 of them are the same.

That's a shame. I was hoping that maybe I could do it myself and save a fortune.

Looks like the stealership are going to get me!

You just need a couple of beers, a 1/4" swivel and either a torx bit, or 7mm socket.

It is an exercise in patience, but it can be done.

Why does my car make a clicking noise when I unlock the door?

The noise you are hearing is most likely the blend door actuator attempting to move to its default position but is not able to do so. This repair usually requires the blend door actuator to be replaced.

Why is my Jeep Wrangler making a clicking noise?

The most common reasons a Jeep Wrangler engine makes a ticking noise are low oil level or pressure, an issue with the ignition system, or an exhaust leak.

Why does my Jeep click when I turn?

Clicking noises when turning can be caused by a loose Castle nut on your front lower ball joint. Ensure the Castle nut is torqued down to the proper specification. A worn-out ball joint can cause similar symptoms.

What does the switch on the door do on a Jeep Wrangler?

The door jamb switch, sometimes called a door jamb light switch or door ajar switch, turns the interior lights on and off when your vehicle doors are opened or closed.
