PARIS: An environmental activist protests at the French Open Grand Slam tennis. The activist, a French citizen entered the court during semi-final match between Marin Cilic of Croatia and Norwegian Casper Ruud and interrupted it for about 15 minutes. The girl was wearing a t-shirt that read, "We have 1028 days left."

The young woman unexpectedly entered the court when Caspar Ruud took a 4-1 lead against Cilic in the third set. She entered the court from among the audience, glued her neck to the set and sat motionless on the court. Authorities arrived but the woman refused to leave the court. The match was interrupted for 15 minutes due to this. Caspar Ruud and Cilic were removed from court for security reasons.

The words on the woman's t-shirt was from the report on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The latest IPCC report found that greenhouse emissions are on the rise and that current plans to tackle climate change are not enough to limit heat to 1.5 degrees Celsius above industry pre-existing levels. Scientists are trying to avoid even more devastating consequences, as per the report. The woman intends to show that the destruction of the earth will begin in 1028 days.

Officials at the French Open later revealed that the activist had entered the stadium with a ticket. The French Open officials said in a press release that the security guards at the stadium tried to persuade the woman but she had to be forcibly removed from the court and was later handed over to the police. Caspar Ruud won the match. The score was 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. He will play against Rafael Nadal in the final.

The French Open semi-final between Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic was held up for 10 minutes after a woman who wore a T-shirt bearing the slogan ‘we have 1028 days left’ invaded the court and tied herself to the net.

The woman is believed to be a climate-change protester.

She walked on to Court Phillipe-Chatrier unchallenged during the third set and attached herself to the net, raising serious questions about security at Roland Garros.

Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo looked on as the players left the court for 10 minutes while the woman was removed.

The incident came after Alexander Zverev suffered a serious injury in the first semi-final, forcing him to retire from his match against Rafael Nadal.

Eurosport pundit Tim Henman described the incident as unsettling.

“No, really shocking scenes, she jumped onto the court and sat down next to the net and it seems like she has attached herself to the net and had something written on her shirt as well and she has tied something around her neck,” Henman said on Eurosport TV.

“So horrible circumstances for the players, and it’s obviously one of their biggest matches and now you’ve got an interruption midway through this third set.

“The players have rightly been taken off the court and it’s up to the security to get things under control. It’s not what you are expecting, we were so shocked to see the Zverev situation and we get on to the second match, midway through the third set, and it is very unsettling for everyone, it’s unsettling here in the studio.

“It’s unsettling and for the two athletes out on court, you’re so focused on what’s going on in the match and for in that type of context, Ruud is in control, he is up 4-1, two breaks, and he is thinking more of the same and then you get such an unexpected interruption, so it’s not easy from his point of view.

“It’s scary for that type of thing, we didn’t expect that at all and we go back to that mentality of sport, it’s about staying in the present and not worrying about the past because you can’t change it. So to have a protester on the court is unsettling, so I hope they can get back out there and play some great tennis and it doesn’t have an impact on this third set.”

In the third set of the Roland Garros semifinal, Croatian tennis player Marin Cilic (23rd ATP) and Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud (8th ATP) were suspended for several minutes. In reality, after a little more than two hours of play, an audience activist stormed the field and tied herself to the net. ‘We have 1,028 days remaining’-the phrase was imprinted on the t-shirt she was wearing.

Cilic and Ruud were stunned by what they were witnessing, but they had no choice but to leave the field until security arrived.
The security officers were able to break the wire and take the girl from the field after a few minutes. Marin Cilic and Ruud then returned to the court and began warming up in preparation for the remaining match.

The activist tying herself to the net

After the protestor tied herself to the net, the players walked off the court. The chair umpire had instructed the players to return to the locker room because it appeared that the net had been damaged. Bizarre that the security didn’t do anything quickly even as she came on to the court and tied herself and even then the security strolled on.

That was not a good look, given the security difficulties that tennis has had in the past. According to reports, the woman is a 22-year-old climate activist. “We have 1028 days left,” her T-shirt reads, pushing the world to act on climate change. On her T-shirt, the protestor had a webpage link that already mentioned the protest. It’s as if they knew the security wasn’t up to par!
