You probably knew when you were very young exactly what one half was. It was one of two equal parts. If one part was smaller or bigger, it was defintely not one half.  The gas gauge in your car (or your boat, plane, motorcycle or most other gasoline operated machines) is probably the easiest way to understand fractions. If the gas tank on a car holds 20 gallons of gas, and the gauge read "1/2", you have 10 gallons of gas. If your car gets 30 miles to the gallon, this means you can drive about 300 miles on a half tank of gas.

The gauge seems to work correctly otherwise - properly indicating the remaining fuel once it passes 7/8. My guess is that it's the fuel sender in the tank. I've searched the forums, but not found anything specific. Anything else I should consider? Addict
Join Date: Nov 2001 Location: Boston Posts: 3,069 Eric, nice rims ... Did the gauge read full before and suddenly stop going up all the way? My gauge never reads quite full, either, I've always just assumed you can't really fill it up all the way because of the auto shut off on the pump. If the sender is the same as on the older 911, it's a little float that rides up and down a couple of vertical wires based on the level of the tank. It's possible that the float is getting hung up near the top, maybe there's a deposit or kink on one of the wires. On the older car, the sender was right at the top of the tank under the front lid and very easy to remove. Not sure where it is on the 993, though. Vic Addict

Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Huntington Beach, CA Posts: 1,353 Likes: 0 I bought my 993 used several months ago & didn't check the full operation of the gauge - it was at about 5/8 full at PPI & about 1/2 at delivery. So, I've never seen it at full. I've tried to top it off, but never get more that 7/8 - exactly between the full & 3/4 marks. I think the sender is similar to older models, but I'll need to check my docs. Looks like another weekend project! Rennlist Member

Both my SC and Carrera cab had the same problem. I think that you can remove the sender and clean it, but as AFAIK most people simply replace them. Race Car

Eric, if the guage is working correctly otherwise, can the gauge needle be pulled out and reinserted so that it's pointing full instead of 7/8 full? - just a thought... The gas in the tank cools the wire which is heated by an electric current. The more gas the less temperature and the more resistance. I can really imagine that this system is broken. What does your OBC in the tach say? There is a range indicator. Whether the last 1/8 is there but is not indicated could possibly be guessed from this gauge. Maybe on a long distance trip with constant gas consumption. A wrong needle adjustment would have to show when ignition is off, wouldn't it? How much gas is left in the tank when the needle is at zero?
