What Is An Oil Change Light

The oil life monitor is an algorithm built into the vehicles computer. This algorithm monitors many different data points in order to determine when the engine oil will require service. When the system determines that service is required, a message or oil change light is displayed to notify the driver.

After completing an oil and filter change the vehicles computer has no way of knowing the service has been done. Preforming the oil life reset procedure is the only way to let the vehicle know that the oil has been changed. If the oil is changed before the warning message is displayed the system will still need to be reset. If the oil life is not reset the warning message will be displayed prematurely.
