What are the normal oil capacity, oil weight, and oil pressure of a Duramax engine? If you own a Chevrolet or a GMC that has a Duramax engine, that’s, of course, a question that’s going to pop up every once in a while.

Luckily, we’re here to help you out. In this blog, we’ve outlined all these different aspects of the oil of the Duramax engine. Furthermore, we also explain the optimal time to change the oil, the oil filter, and the Duramax fuel filter, and we advise about what oil you can best use. Read on!

In the two tables below, we’ve outlined the oil capacity and the oil weight of the 11 different Duramax engines that have been produced since 2001. In the first table, you’ll find the oil capacity and oil weight for the Duramax if you decide not to change the oil filter.

In the table below, you’ll find the oil capacity and filter if you decide to change the oil filter. Read on!

Name Quarts Of Oil (without oil filter) Oil Weight (lbs) Displacement Cylinders Production Years
LB7 9.2 17.30 6.6 V8 2001 – 2004
LLY 9.2 17.30 6.6 V8 2004 – 2005
LBZ 9.2 17.30 6.6 V8 2006 – 2007
LMM 9.2 17.30 6.6 V8 2007 – 2010
LGH 9.2 17.30 6.6 V8 2010 – 2017
LML 9.2 17.30 6.6 V8 2011 – 2016
L5P 9.2 17.30 6.6 V8 2017 – present
LM2 6.4 12.11 3.0 I-6 2019 – present
XLD28 5.5 10.38 2.8 I-4 2012 – present
LWN 5.5 10.38 2.8 I-4 2014 – present
XLD25 4.4 8.30 2.5 I-4 2011 – present

Furthermore, the oil capacity and weight changes when we include the oil filter in the equation. Therefore, you’ll find the oil capacity and oil weight in the table below, including the oil filter.

Name Quarts Of Oil (with oil filter) Oil Weight (lbs) Displacement Cylinders Production Years
LB7 10 18.8 6.6 V8 2001 – 2004
LLY 10 18.8 6.6 V8 2004 – 2005

XLD25 4.8 9.0 2.5 I-4 2011 – present

A Duramax 6.6 V8 engine typically has an oil capacity of 9.2 quarts, excluding the oil filter and 10 quarts, including the oil filter. The Duramax 3.0 I-6 (used in Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon) has an oil capacity of 6.4 quarts, excluding the oil filter and 7 quarts, including the oil filter. The Duramax 2.8 I-4 (used in Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon) has an oil capacity of 5.5 quarts, excluding the oil filter and 6, including the oil filter. The Duramax 2.5 I-4 has an oil capacity of 4.4, excluding the oil filter, and 4.8, including the oil filter.

For the oil weight, the following statement is the one that best summarizes it:

A Duramax 6.6 V8 engine typically has an oil weight of 17.3 pounds, excluding the oil filter and 18 pounds, including the oil filter. The Duramax 3.0 I-6 has an oil weight of 12.11 pounds, excluding the oil filter, and 13.2 pounds, including the oil filter. The Duramax 2.8 I-4 has an oil weight of 10.38 pounds excluding the oil filter and 11.3 pounds including the oil filter, and the Duramax 2.5 I-4 has an oil weight of 8.3 pounds excluding the oil filter and 9 pounds including the oil filter.

Duramax Oil Pressure

Finally, it’s also good to look at the oil pressure of a Duramax engine. For the LB7, LLY, LBZ, LGH, and LML, we found official sources that stated the normal oil pressure at different RPMs. For the other Duramax engines, we used anecdotal sources of people that owned GMC’s or Chevrolets that have these engine in them.

A Duramax 6.6 V8 engine typically has an oil pressure of 14 psi idle and 42 psi at 1,800 rpm. A Duramax 3.0 I-6 engine has an oil pressure of 20 psi at idle and 40 psi at 1,800 rpm, and a Duramax 2.8 or 2.5 I-4 has an oil pressure of 13 psi at idle and 40 psi at 1,800 rpm.

As you can see, the oil pressure of a Duramax engine is generally pretty low. Some owners are sometimes worried about this, but hopefully, this table shows you that a Duramax engine’s low oil pressure is normal.

Name Oil Pressure (idle, psi) Oil Pressure (1,800 rpm, psi) Displacement Cylinders Production Years
LB7 14 42 6.6 V8 2001 – 2004
LLY 14 42 6.6 V8 2004 – 2005

LMM 14 42 6.6 V8 2007 – 2010
LGH 14 42 6.6 V8 2010 – 2017
LML 14 42 6.6 V8 2011 – 2016

When To Change The Oil Of A Duramax Engine?

How often and when to change the oil of a Duramax engine depends greatly on the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and the specific type of car you have. We highly advise you to check the owner’s manual of your car to find this out. However, the general statement is as follows:

A Duramax engine should have an oil change every 5,000 – 10,000 miles depending on the car’s maintenance schedule. Furthermore, it is recommended to change the oil filter every 6 months (or 7,500 miles) and the fuel filter every year (or 15,000 miles).

Best Type Of Oil For Duramax Engine?

In general, there are two types of oil recommended for Duramax engines depending on the region you live in. The general rule is as follows:

The recommended oil for a Duramax engine is 15W-40 for general usage. This oil works well for use in normal or higher temperature regions. If you live in a region with lower temperatures, you should go with a 5W-40 oil.
