Have an old Visa gift card lying around from a past rebate or offer? If you’re like me, you may have a couple of these with odd amounts stuck on them, like $3.72 — a number too small to buy anything large with, but also something that you don’t want to throw away, right? Did you know you can use those small prepaid gift cards to make partial-purchase payments on Amazon?

Consumerist has a great article on how to do this, and I love this idea, especially since many of us have been doing rebates lately (Kohl’s, Olay, etc.) that involve Visa, MasterCard, or American Express gift cards.

While Amazon won’t let you split payments among multiple credit cards, they will allow you to pay both with an Amazon gift card and another form of payment! It’s easy to use up your old Visa gift card by turning it into an Amazon gift card. Send it to yourself as an e-gift card (which you get immediately in your email) and then use that to pay on Amazon!

I’ll walk you through the steps, as it’s very easy to do…

Head over to Amazon’s Order a custom-balance Amazon Gift Card page. Enter the amount of the balance left on your Visa gift card, and fill out the gift card info to have it sent to yourself. Once you pay with your old Visa gift card, you’ll receive a new Amazon gift card in your email!

When the new Amazon e-gift card comes in your email:

Simply click to use that new e-gift card number to pay part for your Amazon order! Amazon will then prompt you to pay for the remainder of your balance with a credit card — and you’ve found an easy way to use up those pesky, low-value Visa gift cards! Happy shopping!

Amazon shoppers flock to the retail giant looking for a great sale. In fact, the retailer brings in an average of $830,000 per minute in revenue. Amazon also makes it incredibly easy to pay for your order online, from offering one-click ordering to even offering payment plans.
But if you are wondering can you split a payment on Amazon, the answer is yes, you can. But there are some limitations. We break down payment splitting on Amazon and ways to do it.

Can you split payments on Amazon orders?

Yes, you can split payments on Amazon if you are paying with a credit/debit card and an Amazon gift card. However, Amazon does not allow split payments between two credit/debit cards.
So if you want to use two different forms of payments, simply purchase an Amazon gift card or use an existing one to use as the second half of the split payment.

Splitting the payment with a debt/credit card and an Amazon gift card can be done in a few easy steps.

  • Add items to your cart.
  • Proceed to checkout.
  • Under “Payment Method” select the card you want to use for part of the payment.
  • Where it says “Add a gift card or promotion card or voucher,” put in your gift card information.
    • Or you can select how much to apply from your existing gift card balance.
  • The order summary will show the amount taken from the gift card and the credit card.

If you prefer to pay through gift cards, Amazon has an option through Amazon Reload. You can set a certain amount of money to be added to the card monthly, weekly, biweekly, or daily. This could be a good way to set money aside throughout the year for Christmas or birthday gifts.

  • Select whether you want an eGift card, physical card, or if you want to print one yourself.
  • Select the gift card design.
    • You can choose from a standard pre-designed card, an animated card, or a custom card with a photo you upload and a custom message

Amazon gift cards don’t have a fee and they never expire. In the past, Amazon has offered incentives for gift card purchases, such as additional credit or a percentage boost to your purchase balance. Watch out for these special promotions by setting a Deal Alert so you are notified when these deals are available.

Can you buy Amazon gift cards from other stores?

Amazon makes it very clear that Amazon.com gift cards should only be purchased from the Amazon website or approved retailers. You should never try to pay for items outside of Amazon with an Amazon gift card.
You can’t use an Amazon gift card to buy items you intend to turn around and sell, whether as part of a business or as an independent contractor.
Amazon gift cards cannot be transferred between accounts.

Amazon Gift Card Scam Warning

Amazon wants to make sure you aren’t getting scammed into buying gift cards, and the company details a list of common scams on its website. Amazon will never pressure you to only use a gift card and any vendor that tries to do so is most likely a scammer. Amazon representatives will never ask for personal information like Social Security numbers, account passwords, or gift card codes through an unsolicited phone call.

Can you do payment plans with Amazon orders?

Amazon Affirm allows you to set up payment plans on select products if you qualify. This can be extremely helpful for those who want to make small monthly payments rather than a large lump sum payment upfront.
The generous payment plans can run from three to 48 months.
There’s no pre-payment penalty but there is an interest rate that will accrue on the purchase. Make sure to double-check the interest rates so that you know exactly how much you are paying for an item, and if you can afford the monthly payments with the interest added.

Always Get the Best Deals at Amazon

Whether you’re paying with a gift card, payment plans or rewards points on Amazon, nothing is more satisfying than getting a great deal on a product. If you’ve been waiting for a sale or a deal on something, set a Deal Alert to get instantly notified when that product goes on sale.
