5.0 out of 5 stars Convenient and easy to install

I needed to replace the locks on the condo I just bought, and after doing some research, decided to get a keypad lock so I don't have to carry a key, and can easily create and delete temporary codes for visitors. The Schlage brand has good reviews and some friends who have one recommend it. I was a little nervous about the installation, but the instructions are clear and the installation was simple. It took me half an hour at most, going slowly and double checking each step - would be much faster a second time.

The lock comes with two 4-digit default access codes, and you can create as many more as you need. It also has a 6-digit programming code, which you need to enter each time a new access code is added or deleted. I have read the locks aren't great if exposed to extreme temperatures, but for a condo door that's interior, I don't anticipate any problems. There's one 9V battery (the small rectangular ones) which will need to be changed about every 2 years; when it starts to run low a warning light will come on in plenty of time. The battery is easily accessed by unscrewing the inside cover. There's also a normal style key, which can be used instead or as a backup.

4.0 out of 5 stars My go-to electronic deadbolt, for a variety of reasons

After many years of trying out different electronic deadlock types, I've settled on this model and I've bought a number of them over the years. Past lock types have had issues with cold weather, premature battery death, and difficulty closing or opening if the door frame or door hinges shift over time. The best feature of this specific lock is that the lock ONLY engages the lock handle, and does not drive the deadbolt itself (you turn the handle and lock or unlock the door yourself). That means a couple of things: one, if the doorframe or hinge or whatever (e.g., new weatherstripping) makes it difficult to line up the bolt perfectly, you don't have to worry about the motor being unable to close or open the bolt. Second, because the lock only consumes electricity for the lighted buttons and the engaging/disengaging of the lock handle, the battery lasts a very, very long time. In my experience, it can last for a couple of years without needing battery replacement.

BEAR IN MIND: if you need an electronic deadbolt that automatically locks the door for you after a set time, THIS IS NOT THE LOCK FOR YOU.

Note that this lock uses a 9volt battery (included) and the design of the housing is a little wide, so be certain to measure carefully before considering this style.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHY did we not do this sooner?

UPDATE: Six months later, and not only do we still love them, we are STILL talking about them and showing them off to everyone, as we rave about them. I even wander down the lock aisle at the big box stores and giggle when I see them for $150-$229. Yes, it is the exact same lock!

Black Friday was the push to finally buy these...couldn't pass up such a good deal; they are completely worth it.

First, of note, there is only a single key. No issue for me as I took all three to the locksmith and for $15 got them all keyed identically, with two spare keys thrown in, all for $15. Just makes life so much easier when the same key works for all the locks (in case of failure). Oh, and the locksmith not only recommended this lock, but retailed them for just under $250. These are rated a couple of steps above basic home locks, NOT the absolute best money can buy, but then you would be looking at double the price and more for more commercial grade locks.

Install was simple and straight forward, took less than 15 minutes from finding the tools to putting them back, all in.

I specifically got the one with the thumb turn and no auto lock; I prefer the manual aspect - in the event there were a failure, I would not want to be merrily ignorant and unintentionally leaving my doors unlocked.

First thing to do is to reset password, seriously, according to my locksmith most folks skip this step.

Operation is simple. Upon departing, punch in code, turn knob to left to engage lock. Upon arrival, punch in code, turn knob to right to disengage. Locking knob free spins until code is punched in, an added feature that makes forced entry that much more difficult, and extends battery life as they are not powering the tumbler, to electronically engage or disengage the deadbolt (again, according to my locksmith). Keypad is backlit, super handy in the dark.

My only complaint is that they are a bit on the bulky side, aesthetically. That said, I am sure if I wanted to pay double or triple the price, this minor issue could be addressed; I am not.

If you think the time is right to upgrade or replace your locks, I would highly recommend this model for cost, functionality and ease of use. But do consider visiting the locksmith first so you can have all your locks keyed identically (note: not all locks will match the pin configuration, if retaining old locks, stick to the same brand as this, or double check that rekeying is an option) - minor cost for huge convenience.

Honestly, I have not availed myself of some of the higher grade features (guest codes etc.), and cannot comment on battery, but so far, we are thrilled with this upgrade, especially when arriving home with armloads of groceries.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not working after a few months

Stop working after a few months. Wasted time and money. When entering the correct pass code, the door cannot be unlocked. You can only go back to using keys. And Schlage warranty requires you to "return of the defective Product to Schlage for inspection" before they consider "at its sole option" how they would honor their warranty. So if you decide to change to a Schlage lock, make sure you keep the old lock because you may need it while you are sending it back for their warrenty check.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn’t work when cold

I purchased 3 of these; 2 for my house entrances and 1 for my detached garage. The garage has a heater and in the winter I keep it just above freezing inside. However as soon as the outside temp hits -10 C or colder the lock starts to fail. The keypad unlocks but the spinning deadbolt won’t unlock. You can feel the device “slipping” when it’s trying to engage. It does not have the same problem on the other 2 installed for the house.

Great product when you install it into a fully heated door but if you’re putting it somewhere cold, it will leave you locked out.
