This job is good for people who just started working

Working at dollar general, id say is a very laid back job. The position of a sales associate is very laid back if you are only cashiering then its extremely laid back in because most of DG stores are small. Depending on shift at the register the mornings are slow and the evenings have a faster paste. Lead sales associates and assistant managers are key holders but the assistant can help create the schedule of that week, they both recover shelves and help the cashier if the line is backed up, DG is a two person system at each shift meaning a lead associate or AM is on the floor and a sales associate is at the register during each shift two different employees come in and out. Managers get paid a salary and a day off and somewhat 2 days if you have a full staff that is, so for them it's a vacation kind of thing so. Stocking on truck days which is only two days and may take three if not finished in 2, they only need about three or four good stockers that can at least knock out 4 or 5 rolltainers a piece each day you can work individualy or with another employee on the same rolltainer. As far as stocking, at any position you can come in and stock on truck day, but your pay stays the same because of the position your at as an employee, but if you want to stock it will make the day go by faster. Also, depending on staff size you could work between 1 and 8 days based off your position at DG the higher the position the more and the lesser the position the less days you come in unle

ProsEasy tasks, and laid back

ConsLow pay, (SA): 10.25$ 10.50$, (Lead SA): 12$ or 12.50$, (AM) I guess is probably slightly higher and for the, (M) it's a paid salary so I don't know???

A good and convenient workplace that gives good deals and work experience.

* Upon clocking in, I would write down the duties the managers assigned me, and get working on it. During and in-between tasks, I would watch for and attend to any customers at the registers. After closing, I would recover the aisles, sweep the floor, collect carts, and dispose of garbage. Most my shifts lasted between 4-6 hours, with the occasional 8. * I learned about what to look for in potential shoplifters, such as a man wearing a heavy coat in the middle of summer to hide items inside of. * Most of the managers were good and experienced. They were sociable, gave me flexibility, and always gave me a heads-up about last-minute changes. They also found me reliable, as they had me cover vacated shifts several times. * Sometimes, co-workers would casually chat with me and customers. It allowed me to befriend several neighborhood locals and learn what they look for whenever they come by. * A few times when we had long lines, we ran out of cash and/or change for the register, and I would have to wait for the manager to make a run to the bank before I can refill it. In the meantime, I would have to ask customers to, if they were able, pay with whatever specific coins or bills we were running low on. * What I enjoyed most was showing and leading customers to good deals in the store, enticing them enough to make more trips to the store in the future. It was also close enough to home to buy things from there myself.

ProsConvenient location, excellent sales deals, management bought pizza

ConsNo healthcare benefits, no employee discounts

All about your manager

I was an employee for almost 2 years until recently, as my manager fired me without reason or notice after having to go to the hospital from a work related injury and not being able to work immediately afterwards. I would not recommend this job outside of being a first-time job, or unless you really have to. Most stores will only hire part-time employees, which means you get no benefits or vacation hours. The wages that you receive is barely enough to scrape by, and is far under the amount you should be paid for the amount of work requested. And in most locations, the store is a very common target for armed robbery, and the company tends to refuse to higher any form of proper security (I was robbed at gun point twice within a 2 month period). I had worked at 3 different stores (technically 4), under 4 different managers during my time with the company. The first manger was skimming hours off of my work week and pocketing them for himself. The next 2 was fairly decent, but was very apparent they had gotten in over their heads. And my last manager was really out there, trying to manage 2 of the Dollar Generals on her own, forcing employees from one store to work at both, transfer them without request/consent, manipulating hours to make her schedule look good to higher management (and thus took hours away until I called HR on her), forcing working unreasonable (sometimes working a 2 double shifts in a row), amongest other things.

ProsFriendly Staff & Costumers most times

ConsNo Benefits for Part-time, Low Wages

it's all right

others have described it as "it's a job" and they're right. it's better than nothing but it's just... all right. you don't make much for what all you do (which includes working the register, stocking, finding misplaced products and putting them back, cleaning, checking in the trucks, etc). while my direct manager and my coworkers are pretty chill, corp is always on our case about the state of the store - but if you want things to look neat, clean, and put away all the time, you have to be willing to hire more people. i've never worked with more than one other person in the store so we can't get much done. we have one goal for the day and that's usually all we have time to complete and there have been times when a worker will be left in the store alone while the fresh truck is left unfinished leaving them to balance all of the register and stocking responsibilities alone until someone else comes in (usually a couple of hours later). moving up is pretty easy, but no one wants to be the store manager after our current one leaves. considering how much that position gets paid and how many hours/work you have to put in, it's just not worth it. some places probably have okay customers but if you're not in a good part of town you're going to be dealing with a lot of nonsense. and i mean a lot.

Proscoworkers are chill, there's always something to do, moving up is easy

Working you to death, one day at a time

A typical work day would be, for me, would be working from 3-10 (sometimes starting earlier, sometimes leaving around 11). I would work the cashier, keep my area clean and organized, and assist customers when needed. This was my first job and the first time I was formerly educated on being a cashier. I learned product placement and the organizational structure of Dollar General. The management at the store was friendly when needed to be and could become hostile in the blink of an eye. My store had an issue with the customers stealing and because of it, they tended to become very aggressive. If the store manager was there, he would be the one to apprehend shoplifters. The female portion of management, however, would either not do anything or would just watch the monitors and confront shoplifters as they pleased, if they pleased. My co-workers were... messy. Some of them I enjoyed working with, but they were all very messy. The hardest part of the job would be having to do multiple jobs at once. The store manager would assign very few people to a shift and because of that, those who worked had to do double the responsibilities. My most enjoyable part would have been the fact that you get paid weekly and some of the customers are really nice.

Prosweekly pay, friendly customers

Consyou aren't paid enough for all the work you do

Terrible Company and Place to Work for

I learned a lot from this job, but it was overall not a very good experience. My breaks were good as I got to go on a thirty minute to one hour break (per how long I was working a certain shift). My coworkers were also kind and helpful. Pay was also good per hour for a Store Associate. Those are really the only three positive things I have to say though. My manager was distant most of the time and not very responsive to me, and would also not let me know how my performance was on a consistent basis. Because of this, I ended up getting my hours cut due to a couple of mistakes I made early on in my time there, which I eventually ended up improving on (but only after waiting a week for him to bring it up to me). Unfortunately, my hours never recovered due to "budget cuts" going on within the company. As such, I had to work a pitiful five hours a week as opposed to the twenty-thirty hours I initially got. I was also never allowed to finish my training, and I also never got benefits. Overall, this job was not worth my time and it will not be worth your time. Do not work for any Dollar General. There are other retail stores that care more about their employees, and will actually respect you as a person rather than an asset.

ProsGood breaks, good pay

ConsLack of job security and benefits, hours cut without clear explanation, bad management

Not Worth It

Good first job. This company suffers from poor management all around. I worked part time as a sales associate initially, transferred stores under the promise of a keyholder position (ended up leaving because they lied). Ended up working full time hours under part time title in books. Regional manager openly allowed a registered offender who harassed several associates in the store several times to continue to shop there and told employees to suck it up or face write ups. No benefits. No PTO. Time off is a hassle. If you dont have kids, don't ever expect a holiday off. I was also encouraged on multiple occasions to work off the clock to "finish things up" and ended up staying HOURS afterwards. But tolerated it in hopes of previously mentioned promotion. Also got wrote up once because although I wasn't involved in the altercation, i was the only employee in the store wearing her name tag at the time so I was the only one named and therefore wrote up. Regional manager later admitted he knew i had nothing to do with it and didn't apologize or retract the write up or anything. Only apology I got was from the customer (who came in later) who told me that she even said I wasn't involved.

ProsSweet Customers

ConsNo benefits, Poor Management, High Stress

The district managers and above expect WAY too much from their workers

I work at an incredibly busy dollar general. The machines are at least 20 years old and so they are always crashing, causing the customers to become upset and the lines to grow. The cashiers are expected to stock shelves and run the register all at once, without having any way of knowing if any customers are waiting to be rung out (no bells are allowed up by the register). We're expected to finish more totes and rolltainers than what is possible given the fact that we are forced to only have 2 workers per shift because we aren't given more hours to have more people per shift. Dollar General gives absolutely no benefits, whatsoever. And the upper management walk through your store for about 15 minutes once every few months and then provides no constructive advice on how to be better, but provides lots of criticism on what needs fixed. I would recommend finding another company to work for before settling on Dollar General.

ProsThere really aren't any I can think of

ConsToo much is expected of you, no benefits, so many pointless rules, careless management, no opportunities to rise up the career ladder

Production Quality

A typical day of work consisted of Myself and one or two more people working while everyone else including management sat around and laughed and conversed among eachother. Throughout my time at Dollar General I learned unless you have a STRONG team, productivity will be minimal. Management could have been better, im not going to go any further into that. The hardest part of this job was doing everything on your own, trying to run the register, run the sales floor (recovering, stock, helping customers ect...), and help other cashiers who could not work the register as well as they should, became very frustrating at times especially since they refused to make me a manager. Alot of my co-workers were "cool with' and/or "related to" the managers so they did nothing and all the slack fell on myself and two other co workers, which was frustrating but we pushed through it and made it work with what we had. the most enjoyable part of my job was interacting with my customers. They were all so funny and to be honest I miss them. They taught me alot.

Proscustomers, flexible with school and my sabbath

Not a good place to work and not a completely terrible one

Has it’s up an downs, basic work environment, management kinda sucked, they didn’t do anything but sit in the office for hours they did very minimal work and didn’t really support you as an employee let alone anything else, only really cared abt themselves, a sense of abusing management power was there, basically make you do all the harder work while they sit back and relax, and if you are not perfect they will cut your hours to the point where you are forced to quit which in my opinion is actually worse than just firing you, also at the dollar general I worked at the manager didn’t like men to work in her store or black people the store has been open since 2016 and has only had 3 men including myself work there and zero black people she told my male friend that is black that tried to work there that he didn’t for the “criteria” of working there but he was completely capable of working there. I mean what kind of criteria do you need to meet to work at a dollar general anyway? BS if you ask me sexist and racist it seems like. There’s much more to it but it’s a long lost and I think I’ve said enough already
