Shopping around for an electric vehicle is always exciting! But it’s hard to say exactly how long a Tesla takes to charge because charging times vary between chargers. In general, you can expect to charge your Tesla in anywhere from 15 minutes to 40 hours.

To understand the time discrepancy, you need to know about the different charger types. You have two main options for home charging:

  • When you connect it to a standard 110-volt outlet, your Tesla will take between 20 to 40 hours to charge, depending on your model.
  • With a Tesla home charger, it should only take between 8 and 12 hours to charge. In short, it’s perfect for drivers who come in after work and park their car for the night. The only drawback of the Tesla home charger is that it costs about $1,700 to install.

If that seems a little pricey, you can also find Tesla Supercharger stations all over the country. If you find a local station, you can charge your car in 15 to 30 minutes.

    Calculating how long does it take to charge a Tesla is dead simple. Pretty much anybody can do it. We are going to show you how to figure out how long does it take any Tesla to charge (Model 3, S, X, Y, CyberTruck) from 0% to 100%, or from 20% to 90%, and so on.

    Simple Example: Let’s say you have a Tesla Model 3 Long Range car with a 75 kWh battery. You use a Tesla home charger that has an 11.5 kW wattage. How long does it take to fully charge a Tesla Model 3 (0% to 100%)? Here’s how simple the calculation looks like:

    Charging Time = Battery Capacity / Charging Wattage = 75 kWh / 11.5 kW = 6.52 Hours

    That means a Tesla Model 3 can be fully charged in 6 hours and 31 minutes with an 11.5 kW Tesla home charger.

    As you can see, you only need to know 3 key metrics:

    • Battery Capacity. Tesla produces cars with 50-100 kWh batteries. Just check which model you have and you will know what size battery that car has. Tesla mileage will, of course, also depend on the battery size.
    • Charging Wattage. Superchargers have a wattage of up to 150 kW, public chargers have a wattage of 11 kW or 22 kW (in general), an at-home Tesla Wall Connector produces 11.5 kW wattage, and the simple home outlet (120V, 15A) produces 1.8 kW wattage.

      Your Tesla app will tell you what is the charging wattage. The time it takes to charge a Tesla is based on these kW numbers.
    • Charging Percentage. 100% charging percentage means that you fill a Tesla from 0% to 100%. In practice, you never start charging at 0% and never charge it to 100%. You start at 10%, 20%, 30%, and so on and usually charge it to 90%.

    You just insert the car model ‘Tesla Model 3 Standard Range’, the charging wattage ’22 kW’, and the charging percentage ‘100%’. Here is the result:

    A Tesla Model 3 car will fully charge in 2.27 hours. That’s 2 hours and 16 minutes charging time on a 22 kW charging station.

    Example 2: How long does it take to fully charge a Tesla Model S car (100 kWh battery) with a 150 kW Supercharger?

    You just insert the car model ‘Tesla Model S’, the charging wattage ‘150 kW’, and the charging percentage ‘100%’. Here is the result:

    A Tesla Model S car will fully charge in 0.67 hours. That’s just 40 minutes of charging time on a Tesla supercharger.

    Example 3: Let’s look at the Tesla Cybertruck and its big 200 kWh battery. How long does it take to fully charge a Tesla Cybertruck with a Tesla home charger?

    Tesla home charger generates 11.5 kW of electricity. To fully charge a Tesla Cybertruck from 0% to 100% you would need to charge non-stop for 17.39 hours (17 hours and 23 minutes).

    Tesla superchargers can produce an enormous amount of current. Their top wattage is an incredible 150 kW.

    Using Tesla supercharger is the quickest way to charge your electric vehicle. Supercharge will fully charge all Tesla cars within 1 hour, if operating at full 150 kWh output.

    In short, all Tesla models can be fully charged with a supercharger within an hour (when it operates at 100% output; or 150 kW).

    Here it’s key to understand that supercharger is ‘super’ for a reason. That current is immense. Let’s look at how long it takes for other charges to charge these electric vehicles:

    Most public chargers have a max. wattage of either 22 kW or 11 kW. If we take as an example a 22 kWh public charger, we can calculate the Tesla charging times for all models:

    Theoretically, using a public charger to charge a Tesla fully, takes anywhere from 2 to 5 hours. Tesla Cybertruck, with its big 200 kWh battery, will take almost 10 hours to charge.

    Practically, however, we charge Tesla from about 20% to 90%. A 22 kW public charge will take less than 2 hours to charge a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range car.  Even the 100 kW cars like Model S and Model X will take 3 hours and 11 minutes to charge.

    Note: With the 11 kW public charges, it takes double the time to charge a Tesla than with a 22 kW public charger.

    The best way to charge a Tesla is by using a home charger. Yes, it is much slower than using a Tesla supercharger, but you can park your car overnight, and wake up to a fully charged Tesla.

    For standard outlet charging, you will have to check your Tesla app for charging wattage:

    • If you are using a 120V 15A outlet (USA), you can deliver 1.8 kWh per hour. That means it will take about 42 hours to fully charge a Tesla Model 3 (75 kW battery) from 0% to 100%.
    • If you are using a 220V 15A outlet (Europe), you can deliver 3.3 kWh per hour. That means it will take about 23 hours to fully charge a Tesla Model 3 (75 kW battery) from 0% to 100%.

    Any Tesla car can be fully charged overnight (9 hours), with the exception of the Tesla Cybertruck.

    The best-selling Model 3 cars are charged from 0% to 100% in less than 7 hours. Practically, when you are charging from 20% to 90%, it will take less than 5 hours to charge a Tesla Model 3.
