3.0 out of 5 starsMixed Thoughts on This Vacuum

Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2016

I have had a Hoover rewind for the past 2 years. I bought it for $80 from wally world and figured it would last long enough. Well, its motor finally started the pitch of soon death so I decided it was time for a new one. It still works well, its just on the path to its last day.

In looking around for a new vacuum, I really wanted one that would last for more than 2 years. I am somewhat disappointed that my rewind only lasted 2 years, but I have a house with animals so it had quite a bit of heavy use. I liked that vacuum a lot so I decided Hoover would be the way to go. This vacuum has some great reviews with some high end features/looks. So I figured I would give it a go.

Pros:
-Suction: It really does have great suction. It is fairly stronger then my older, lighter vacuum. It does seem to pull up more of the deeper laid dirt, but its a new vacuum compared to an old vacuum.

-Attachments: I like the longer hose. It is far easier to use than my older vacuum's. The vacuum has the weight to hold itself up/not fall over when using the hose as well. The extendable hose attachment is useful as well. I am 6' so bending isn't required nearly as often. The duster works well, It changes angle for awkward vents or ceiling fans. The spinning attachment for pet hair works as well as the last one, except the stronger suction of this vacuum really makes it spin better. The edge attachment is a basic one but works well. All the attachments fit on the machine when not in use.

-Light: My last one didnt have a path light. This one does. I wish it was an LED for a brighter light, but I still like it.

-Suction to attachment switch: I like the dial to turn off the head completely and send the suction to the attachment hose. It doesnt blow everything away when I'm trying to get up dog hair in the kitchen. The brush off for the floor option on the height dial is nice too.

Buttons: The on button is well located on the handle and the foot press button is well placed as well.

Cons:

-Looks: I really liked the way this think looked. Shiny, metallic (despite being plastic), and overall impressive looking. The best part of the looks was the top section that had a comparable shape to the dyson top. Well, now that I have vacuumed a few times, dirt has blocked the view. Yes I can clean it, but I dont feel like it should need to be cleaned every single use. All you see after a vacuuming is a canister covered in dirt.

-Motor: So I love the suction. The motor actually isnt too loud for that much suction. It is the heat the motor pumps out that is the problem. My last vacuum only pumped out heat when it had a clog or was being used when the canister was full. This one pumps out heat as well as the heater in my car on high! It literally raises the temperature of my house. In case I was overloading it, I have upped the height of the brush head to five or six on the dial. My carpet is extremely short, so some loss in effectiveness at this height. Even if I vacuum at this height (starting off so it isn't already hot), it still pumps the heat out. I am fearful that it is laboring too hard for it to pump this kind of heat out.

-Belt: I dont know about this one, but when I vacuum I move the vacuum back and fourth. When I pull it back towards me and then follow through with a forward push, the belt whines. At this point, I am getting nervous about keeping the vacuum.

-Handle: Do not pick up this vacuum by the canister. That is how my old one picked up and nearly every other Hoover we have had. This one, the canister just pops off when you try to do that. Instead you have to pick it up awkwardly by the handle, which gives when you pick it up. I am actually upset by this a fair amount due to the handle to pick it up is so high on the vacuum. You really have to strain to pick it up that way, and I am a 6' tall guy who regularly exercises. This shouldn't even be the issue. I've given up just about on the handle and have been bear hugging the thing when going up steps. Its a sad sight.

Final thoughts: I love the accessories but the most important parts have issues that are scaring me. It feels like I bought a pretty leather interior car that has engine issues. I don't know what to think about it and if I should return it for these issues. It would be a hassle and I would have to restart my search for a vacuum. I dont want to spend nearly $200 on something that will eat itself before the year is up.

Hoover, please contact me to discuss the motor heat issue if you like. Maybe it is normal for a motor of this size to put out exhaust, but I would still like that confirmed. Also, are you supposed to lift the machine by the somewhat flimsy handle like that?

Is the Hoover Wind Tunnel a good vacuum?

In our evaluation of the Best Vacuums, one Hoover model makes the list: the Hoover WindTunnel 3 High Performance Pet Upright Vacuum. It earns the No. 6 spot in our rankings.

Is Hoover WindTunnel 3 self propelled?

A: No this unit is not self propelled. From my understanding self propelled vacuums start moving without having to be directed or pushed, this vacuum requires a person to push it in the direction that needs to be cleaned.

Does the Hoover WindTunnel 3 have a retractable cord?

WindTunnel technology and Multi-Cyclonic filtration lifts and removes surface debris and deep down embedded dirt with no loss of suction. The 25ft. power cord automatically retracts in seconds so you never have to wrap a cord again.

Does the Hoover WindTunnel 3 have a belt?

A: Yes; this vacuum has a need to replace belt located under the bottom plate of the vacuum.
