The gas tank on Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine is made of a non-corrosive or corrosion-resistant material to shield it from the deteriorating properties of ethanol, salt and water. Some gas tanks are equipped with a vented fuel cap that prevents a vacuum from forming in the fuel line. Do not add stale gas to the fuel tank. Stale gas can form gummy deposits in the carburetor, blocking the carburetor jets and throttle opening. If you notice the gas tank is damaged or leaking, replace it immediately with a new tank.

  1. Start the lawn mower and run the fuel tank dry. If you don't want to run the mower out of gas, use a fuel line clamp to seal the fuel in the tank during removal. For either method, turn off the mower and disconnect the spark plug boot from the spark plug on the front of the engine. This will prevent it from accidentally starting.

  2. Install a fuel line clamp over the fuel line that runs out of the gas tank to prevent any gas from leaking out. Remove the fuel line end that's attached to the carburetor.

  3. Remove the bolts holding the fuel tank assembly to the engine, using a socket wrench. Place a bucket next to the lawn mower and hold the fuel tank and fuel line over the bucket.

  4. Release the fuel clamp on the fuel line so the gas can drain into the bucket. If installing a new gas tank, remember to attach the fuel line to the tank and carburetor before fueling.

Can you repair a hole in a plastic fuel tank?

To seal a plastic gas tank with epoxy glue, start by draining the tank and letting it dry. Then, sand the area around the hole or crack with coarse grit sandpaper, and clean it with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol. Next, mix the epoxy glue, apply it over the opening, and press a fiberglass patch over the epoxy.
