Has anyone replaced the Sonata NF ignition lock cylinder. I've replaced in other cars but this one looks different. I have removed the kick panels and have taken the plastic light assembly off from around the switch. But I can not find the hole to press the button to release the cylinder. I don't have the new cylinder to see the location of the release button. I sure hope that I don't have to remove the entire switch assembly to pull the cylinder out. Any assistance appreciated.

You taking too much apart..

Pop the cylinder assembly out of column lock, and take it to locksmith.. maybe $25 repair, as opposed to $160+ for new cylinder assembly with key, thus making you a 2 key car then.

Remove left lower dash panel, unplug white connector, put cylinder in ACC position, use something to push the button in the hole and pull assembly out.. couple second to release cylinder and pull out... has to be in ACC to put cylinder back into place.. that or just drive to lock smith and let them pop it out.

Our place, we take them out, used to sublet them to lock shop, then MGR decided the techs should be locksmiths.. smith was only charging us $20 I think, where we add maybe $50 for coding new cylinder assembly for old key.. make sure the key you have is new looking (not beat up-worn).. have dealer cut you a new key via code.

Forgot to add -- Message me your key code,, you might could win a pair on brand new Hyundai key worth maybe $25 if your code match a set I have.. been running couple yr now, not had a match yet

SBR, Thanks for the response.
The problem is that I can't see/find the hole to push the button. Give me an idea of where it is. top, bottom, left. right or maybe clock hour positions. Can only get good look at bottom and left side. But if knew where to look, I may be able to feel it.
What would a locksmith do to it. rebuild it or clean it? I thought about cleaning it with some carb or brake cleaner. would that work?

OK, I got it out. Button was on left side at 9'clock. I was wrong in earlier post, it was the right side and bottom that I could see well. The left side was too close to the steering column to get good look. Got a flashlight to get a good look at that side.
Thanks again.

Find a local lock shop, maybe $25 and you be on the road again..

Supply new condition key to shop while repair.. If everyday key lookig worn,, have dealer cut new key via code, and toss worn key.

IM me your key code, might could win a pair of brand new keys if I have that set.. got like 10 set, aint nobody match yet

I am having ignition lock problems described in this post and will be replacing the ignition lock cylinder and just have a couple of questions.

When I look for the part online I see it as cylinder assembly - steering & ignition lock part number 81920T and appears to be not only the cylinder but also an outside cover and wire harness and is priced at around $115.00. Can I only buy this as a package or is there anywhere I buy just the steering & ignition cylinder at a cheaper price?

Also I want to have the new cylinder re-keyed to match my current key and would like to know if a locksmith can do it with the new cylinder and my old key or if I would need to first remove my old ignition cylinder and also give that to the locksmith? I ask because my Sonata is my only car and I would like to be able to get the new cylinder re-keyed before I start taking the old lock out.

I replaced my ignition cylinder on a 2009 Sonata a few weeks again. The part is available at Rockauto for about $16.
Easy to replace, I have a video on Youtude showing how to do it.

My problem was the starter the stator motor stayed engage when starting the engine.

Best $16 ever spend on the car!

Oh....no need to go to a locksmith if you just have to replace the ignition cylinder.
Try that first and see if the problem is fixed.

Kinda bringing this thread back from the dead but I had this issue today and had to run home to get my other set of keys. This set had two keys on it, one which was used and I guess a valet key that is brand new. Only the valet key worked, the other two didn't work and even with the valet key I can tell its sticking a bit. I can use the valet key for now but I want to get this problem fixed.

Sbr if I took out my cylinder and took it to a locksmith does it have to be a specialty locksmith or can any locksmith do this job? I kinda want to go this route if I can as I don't want to have to have two sets of keys (and / or replace the door and trunk locks) if I went about changing the cylinder.

Bumping the thread - I had this problem before I locked the steering wheel...which was a dumb thing to do, but it's locked. Will this create any additional problems with taking out the cylinder?

Also I don't understand what's broken. I understand locks, I have replaced ignition switch wires before. I understand when a wire/contact fails. I understand when a key wears down and can't move the pins, so the lock can't turn. But what can go wrong with the cylinder itself?

That happened to me as well with my car but I had a valet key that I was able to move the cylinder. Later on I tried my normal keys again and got it to work by pushing in quite hard and turning. I think this created another problem for myself though because the button must have jammed and I couldn't lock the car anymore because the ignition always thought the keys were in it. I took the cylinder out and had a locksmith clean it out, he said he shaved down a few burrs and I put it back and and it works 100% again. If the cylinder tumblrs itself are worn out they will fix that too, I guess they can rebuild them or whatever.

As for taking it out I dont think the wheel being locked will be a problem. All you gotta do is open the fuse box door on the left side, pull the dash all apart then you need a really small screwdriver (Im not kidding it needs to be TINY) to take a screw out of the plastic cover that lights up. Then disconnect the White plugin, put the key in the ignition, turn it to ACC, look for a tiny hole on the left side and stick something pokey in the hole, push it as you pull the key outwards and the cylinder will pop out.

You need to have key at the "ACC" position to be able to push button to allow key with cylinder to be pulled out of the column lock housing..

To replace ignition switch (electric switch to turn on electric and crank engine), you remove small screw at tail end of column lock, and rotate key to ?? position to allow switch to be removed.. I dont recall position for switch removal though.

Issue with rotating key in cylinder be a key cylinder concern..

Common issue seen with broken ignition switch be incorrect switching with key rotation.. see them start cranking when the key just gets past ACC to RUN position

Hey guys, just coming to report back - sprayed powdered graphite in it, thought it did nothing. Tore dash apart. Tried it again "for the **** of it" before starting to disconnect the cylinder. The key turned with no problems whatsoever. I know stuff like liquid wrench/WD-40 takes a while to "penetrate"/creep around the system, but I didn't realize powdered graphite could have a delayed effect (then again, I guess it doesn't, I probably just shook the cylinder around) while messing with stuff in there.

Anyway, the point - powdered graphite MIGHT work for you if you run into the same problem. I am guessing this is temporary of course. Thank you all for the help.

I actually sprayed some penetrating oil in my cylinder as well. Locksmith said this was not a good idea. :/

How much does it cost to replace a lock cylinder?

The average cost for door lock cylinder replacement is between $209 and $225. Labor costs are estimated between $61 and $77 while parts are priced at $148. This range does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your specific vehicle or unique location. Related repairs may also be needed.

Can you change an ignition lock cylinder without a key?

Take the Ignition lock cylinder and a straightened paperclip and insert the clip into the slot and then turn it anti-clockwise. This locks the cylinder and stops the ignition from starting.

How long does it take to replace a ignition lock cylinder?

Ignition cylinder replacement will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. This timeframe will shift depending on the exact make and model of a car. For instance, this process might take longer when working on classic cars.

Can I replace car ignition myself?

You can replace the ignition switch yourself, but it's not an easy task: you will have to remove the steering wheel and work close to the airbag - which can be dangerous. Don't hesitate to call a professional mechanic if you're not feeling confident.
