1997 dodge ram 2500 v10 towing capacity

I'v e seen this here on the site somewhere but I can't seem to find it. I am looking for the towing specs for a 1997 ctd 2500. I have 8800 GVW the one tons I beleive have a 9200. If by adding air bags will I have the rating of a one ton. What I am looking at towing to the max gvw on the truck. But I want some buffer zone to 9200 for safety.

Some people have said that no matter what you do your 2500 will still only be a 2500 legally based on what is stamped on the door. That said, if you keep your trailer weight under or jast at 10k, you should (I stress should) be ok. I tow a 6k trailer with 900 lbs of tongue weight with no issues.

I thought the 3500 and the 2500 had the same frames the oly difference was the the front hubs and a extra leaf in the rear. But what do I know.. I am still learning

To be perfectly honest, I don't know what the differences between the two are except for the badges and the stamps on the door.

From dodge
The most you should bumper pull is 10000lbs

A4 w/3.55 gears is 16000 GCWR
A4 w/4.10 gears is 18000 GCWR
M5 or M6 no matter what gears is 20,000 GCWR

You truck can be a max of 8800lbs so that leaves 11,200 for the trailer.

That being said, the 8800lbs is a legal rating, while the GCWR's are a dodge/warranty rating. As long as you stay under 26,000 GCWR and the truck is under 8800 lbs you are still legal, but I wouldn't try to pull that much on a stock tranny, or with stock power.

The most I have driven around at was about 21,500 GCWR

Thanks for the info, I am looking at a 5er around 12500 max. My only concern will be the pin weight of the trailer. What is the dry curb weight of a 2500 2wd auto long box? I will be having the tranny done with a new TC before I pull that amount. I have about 280hp now, I want to go up to about 350. So I think I won't have an issue with the trailer weight just pin weight.

Mine weighs in at 2.99 metric tonnes with me in it and my tool box.I think that is around 6500 lbs.

My 4x4 quad cab weighs in around 7300 with a bunch of tools, full tank of gas, and me. The GVWR really should be higher for these trucks. Now that I have a flatbed on the back its closer to 7600. I just don't get how the front axle is rated at 4850, and the rear for 6080(limit of the stock tires, my tires are rated at 3450 each) but the truck is only rated at 8800. Hell there is 4600 on my front axle, so I cant even legally put the same amount of weight on my rear axle as my front.

Moving on, I know I was above the 8800 lbs on the truck when I was around 21k GCWR, but the truck wasn't even squatting. My plan is to get duals for the rear, maybe some air bags if it ever squats(I have an extra leaf already) and pull all the badging off the truck and hope I never get checked for weight. If I towed over the limit a lot I would most likely just get a 3500 dually, but I do it so rarely it doesn't really make sense for me.
