I bought several 12 packs over the course of a few months and walked home 2 to 3 miles with the 12-pack on my shoulder back to my apartment on Spring Street. Back then, Blatz was a welcome alternative to the national and regional beers available at the time. It wasn't promoted or expected to be all-star or world class, just a solid brew that you might prefer to Old Style, Schmidt, Miller etc, All good things come to an end. After 8-10 six-packs I got tired of the taste and moved on to other brews. I remember the store clerk telling me that they had Blatz Beer on sale for xx dollars. It smells slightly sweet, but has a very thick barley forward smell with a hint of grassy hops and a touch of wet corny sweetness. The taste is fuller than expected with a bigger malt presence than most and has a slightly hoppy edge to keep it from being sweet. It's thicker feeling without being thick like a Schlitz or a non adjuncted lager. It goes down like a light lager but it's not. Overall the sum is greater than it's parts on this one. +22.2% Drank from a 12 ounce can. Scores are based on the style. Look - The logo is incredibly attractive, but the can as an ensemble isn't that great. The silver color doesn't draw me in, and the tessellated little Blatz words across the can just clutter things up. Smell - Very faint metallic sweetness. Maybe some grape? Not much there. Taste - The first thing that comes to mind is cream soda. Somewhat vanilla sweetness, but even with its lightness, it still begs for some bitterness to round it out. Feel - Thin body with a pleasant amount of fizz. Goes down quite easy. Overall - I was hoping to find a new hipster-y grandpa beer to love, but this one is pretty lame. Pours crystal clear pale golden yellow color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Good appearance. Aromas of cracker, corn, white bread dough, and lightly toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of wood, peppercorn, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. A bit too fruity corn aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt/grains and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and outstanding style example. One of the better AAL I've had, as expected of Pabst. -13.3% One of the first beers I ever had, and I do not recall it fondly. Now this is almost 40 years ago, so reviewing it now is patently unfair, but so be it. I do recall one thing about this beer fondly. My granddad owned a bar and my dad would work for him when he needed help. Part of his payment would be cases of Blatz. What I liked was the case the beer came in. Heavy cardboard, with a split top that opened and closed over 12 bottles each. We had stacks of those in our garage. Damn good memory from bygone days. Pleasant, sweet, aroma. Tastes like what most people would recognize as beer. Yes, it is an adjunct but it hides the fact reasonably well. Beer snobs like to rip on basic lagers, especially when they're relatively cheap. The bottom line is, this isn't a bad beer, especially for the price. No obvious corn or rice flavor to it, no unpleasant smell or taste. On a warm summer day, I can think of a lot worse beers to be drinking, even highly rated craft beers. If I went to someone's house and offered me one, I'd gladly accept it. If they were good company and I didn't have to worry about driving home, I'd have a few more. It is refreshing and it also comes in an exceptionally sturdy cardboard box that can be repurposed for many years to come. The 24 pack of bottles generally runs about 15 dollars and the beer is quite good, several bottles can be drunk with no major problems. Many of the craft/special beers, which are good in their own right, can contain lots of alcohol and other chemicals that cause the drinker to become drunk and sick after only drinking one or two beers. Blatz is so well balanced that the enjoyment can be prolonged well into the 4th or 5th beer making the total experience on par with or exceeding that of some of the very rich and chemical laden craft-type beers. With that said, welcome to applicability, my Blatz review. You get that macro yellow, small 1/3" white head. Aroma smells like mass production and grains. Super carbonated, long boil high alpha acid non proprietary Cascade and noble hops? This is my party beer. Good in so many situations, reliable, cheap. Its not my go to for hops, malt or yeast (which is kinda fruity here, that or its the corn adjunct). Good for camping, fishing, shooting, golf, partying, palate cleanser, whatever floats your boat.
