Spring is in the air, or it’s at least alive and well in your local Chick-fil-A. They just launched their latest frozen treat: Frosted Sunrise, on Monday, and it'll be available until June 2. Joining the ever popular frosted lemonade and frozen coffee in Chick-fil-A's lineup, the Frozen Sunrise combines a Vanilla Icedream soft serve with orange juice.

Customers are promised something creamy, tart, and refreshing. This flavor profile immediately conjures up the iconic dreamsicle, but by combining an already lower-calorie option (Icedream) with fresh orange juice, it’s definitely not as dense as a traditional dessert. This hybrid is neither a dessert nor a smoothie, it’s positioned somewhere in the middle. But that leaves me asking, when am I supposed to consume it?

As someone who makes sure that the glass of milk and the glass of orange juice stay firmly on opposite sides of the breakfast tray, I was wary. But as a fan of any limited edition fast food novelties, I knew I was going to try it anyway, regardless of my trepidation.

“Frosted Sunrise combines simple but flavorful ingredients into a tasty treat that customers can enjoy throughout the day,” said Amanda Norris, senior director of menu development for Chick-Fil-A, in a statement provided on Chick-fil-A’s main communication site The Chicken Wire.

It's not being promoted as a breakfast milkshake, which was my immediate thought when I saw the press release. But, after tasting it for myself, I really can’t see any other reasonable explanation for its creation. It’s not sweet enough to enjoy as a treat on its own, and the acidic punch of orange juice reminds me of a healthy fruit smoothie. The resulting flavor is indeed both mild and fresh, perfectly reminiscent of a dewy spring morning.

Would I drink this with my breakfast? No. I’m still going to get my classic breakfast beverage (a Diet Coke with lemon) when I stop by for a chicken biscuit, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get something more decadent. Bagel Fridays are a delicious way to indulge a little bit after a long work week. Who’s to say Milkshake Mondays can’t be next? Sometimes we need a small dose of joy when coming down off that weekend high. Anything goes in 2018.
