2002 Toyota Solara

Asked by   in Sun City Center, FL on  January 25, 2015

I swapped read quarter windows switch with convertible top switch. Top works fine up/down. rear quarter windows do not close.

Had problem with drivers door window. works now, honestly think it was a loose wire.

Rear windows got stuck open after opening convertible top. with key on "ON" position, car not started. I was trying to see if there was a way to reset master window control as seen on a youtube video from Australia - now the windows are stuck open. suggestions?

Did you get an answer? My Solara convertible did the same thing today,. Rear quarter windows are stuck down after opening the top.today

purchased and installed new(er) controller, installed. It's located inside trunk, behind carpet.
Try the convertible top switch, first - as in "CLOSE" then quickly "close" the rear window switch. This works for me. Thinking this is a weird electrical issue. Toyota dealer was no help. Claims there is no 'master' reset code, even though austrailian youtube video shows one.

If anyone has this problem with the rear quarter windows on a Solara convertible after changing the driver's side master window switch assembly, make sure you put in the right switch assembly. The inexpensive one (

This is always a difficult decision. The choices seem to be to try a patch in situ and re-glue it or take the top off and do it up professionally.

Here's one DIY fix that looks like it might work for you.

If this seems like more than you want to tackle, see if an upholstery shop will do this for you. They probably won't guarantee the work for obvious reasons but it's cheaper than the alternative and may hold up for a season or two. Naturally the more the top goes up and down, the more chances of it detaching again.

Insurance will not replace convertible window that shattered, and I have been using a tarp for protection when it rains (which is a pain) however someone said that if it rains in the area where top folds down into, there is a “drain hole” and not to worry. Will water drain from that area or is it going to fill up if I don’t cover the open window area? I’m really just trying to get my car to keep running for another year before getting another vehicle and am going to replace the glass with clear vinyl. It’s been a wonderful car!

Unfortunately in order to replace the glass, it requires a 'new' canvas top with the glass. I'm told that the glass is installed with special processes when the top is made and can't be replaced separately. I'M TOLD Seems that we are stuck with this scenario unless someone knows of a different resource for glass replacements. About the water intrusion, there are some drains within the body that can relieve most of the water but you MAY hear some sloshing while driving in heavy downpours. (Don't ask me how I know this) Just be aware that should the water remain within the car body for a short time, the foam seats/sound insulations will suck up the water an you will begin to see evidence of MOLD on the seats, rubber, etc. and depending on your health it MAY cause you some breathing issues. It will also create a fogging issue on the interior glass and plastics when the temperatures changes. You can easily remove the back seat cushion (pull the front straight upwards) and also the spare tire well for standing water and you will see a few rubber drain plugs in the bottom floor in both areas. Hope this helps you out some.

How much does it cost to fix the back window of a convertible?

Cost. A new convertible rear window can cost you anywhere from $100 to $400 on parts alone, while labor can set you back another $50 to $150, depending on the rates in your area. The price of a replacement part varies depending on its brand, material, and finish.

Why was the Toyota Solara convertible discontinued?

Due to poor sales in the midsize convertible market, Toyota won't be restarting production of its Camry Solara Convertible, which was last built in December 2008. The car will still be available in showrooms for at least the next two years, however, as Toyota has enough inventory on hand to last until that time.

Can you replace just the window in a convertible top?

Anyone with a one piece convertible top cannot replace the window only. If your window bond is failing (separating from your material) or your window is cracked, scratched or otherwise damaged, there is not an effective way to replace the window only and salvage the rest of your top.

Are Toyota Solara convertibles reliable?

The Solara is generally viewed as a reliable vehicle. "Since it shares many parts with the nation's best-selling sedan, the Camry, this Toyota is unlikely to send you to the service department very often," says the New York Times.
