Answer: Mr. Craven did not like the garden because his wife who had loved it had met with an accident there and died. He was unhappy and didn't want to think or talk about it.

The theme/moral of The Secret Garden is that a child's love and kindness can heal the emotional scars of their parents. Throughout most of the book, Colin and Mr. Craven were very similar.
