The God who created the heavens and the earth is the same God who fearfully and wonderfully made you and me.
Jehovah – Self-Existent OneHe is the Alpha and Omega. God has always existed and will always remain. He has no beginning and no end.
Adonai – LordBefore we can know God according to many of His other names in the Bible, we must know Him as our Adonai. He must be our Lord and master. As our Creator and our Redeemer, He is worthy of our lives lived in surrender to His loving lordship.
El Elyon – God Most HighGod is omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), and omnipresent (present everywhere). He is sovereign over the affairs of heaven and earth.
El Roi – God Who SeesThis is one of my favorite names of God. God sees into the depth of our hearts and minds. There is no emotion, thought, fear, or hurt that kept hidden from His eyes. The idea that there is a person who knows me this intimately can be an intimidating thought. Yet when we understand the nature of our heavenly Father, we can take comfort in this comprehensive knowledge He has of us. As His children, He loves us deeply. Despite our dark and sinful nature. We are covered in the blood of Jesus. That is what He sees.
El Shaddai – All-Sufficient OneThere is no desire, need, or weakness that cannot be fulfilled or provided for by God Himself. His grace is sufficient for us.
Jehovah Jireh – Lord Who ProvidesGod has provided His Son to pay the penalty for our sin that we may inherit eternal life together with Him. This is who we are in Christ. If He has already provided for us in this way, we can be confident that He will continue to provide for our every need.
Jehovah Rapha – Lord Who HealsThis is one of my favorite meanings of the names of God. God gave His Son not only to meet our greatest need of salvation but also to heal our greatest brokenness – sin. Our Jehovah Rapha sent His Son to heal the devastating effects of sin and restore our broken relationship with Him.
Jehovah Nissi – The Lord My BannerUnder God’s banner, we move from victory to victory. “Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57 NASB)
Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is PeaceBecause we have peace with God through Jesus Christ we have the peace of God in our hearts and minds. No matter the obstacles life may throw at us, we know that our God is sovereign and we have an eternal inheritance to look forward to.
Jehovah Sabaoth – Lord of HostsOur greatest enemy lives and attacks us from within the spiritual realm. However, the kingdom of heaven is fully equipped with a host of angelic armies fight for us in these heavenly places. God commands them to fight on our behalf. We are able to partner in this battle through prayer. Praying scripture is one of the most effective strategies we have in this fight.
Jehovah Mekoddishkem – Lord Who SanctifiesSanctify is just a fancy name way to say ‘set apart’ or ‘to make holy’. It is God who continues the work in our hearts to make us more holy. More like Jesus. More like Himself.
Jehovah Raab – The Lord My ShepherdWatch the Names of God and their Meanings Bible Study Video We can trust God as we follow Him, knowing that He is a good Shepherd who leads us along the right paths and toward the things that are ultimately for our good. This is such an important truth to stand on as we study the names of God and their meanings.
Jehovah Tsidkenu – The Lord My RighteousnessThere is nothing we can do to earn our righteousness. God alone is righteous. A person is made righteous when they confess their sins and accept Jesus as God’s way of forgiveness and salvation.
Jehovah Shammah – The Lord is NearGod’s promise to never leave or forsake us is a great source of comfort for every believer. He lives within us through the indwelling Holy Spirit and remains active and present in our daily lives.
