Michigan native Kevin Dykstra is obsessed with a deathbed confession made by a lighthouse keeper in the 1890s about a national treasure dating back to the Civil War. The story goes that Union soldiers tracked down Confederate president Jefferson Davis in 1865 and confiscated his gold. The stolen loot was smuggled north some years later but ended up in Lake Michigan, where Dykstra believes it still remains. His quest to prove it ultimately takes him and his team to the bottom of Lake Michigan.

The Curse of Civil War Gold TV Series Information

The series follows Kevin Dykstra, who has been on an eight-year quest to solve the mystery of what happened to the lost confederate gold of the Civil War. With compelling evidence and now the support of Marty Lagina, Dykstra and his team embark on an action-packed hunt in an effort to finally decipher what could be one of the greatest conspiracies in American history. In its first season, “The Curse of Civil War Gold” reached 24.2 million total viewers in Live +3 delivery.

The History Channel, which is one of the most-watched cable networks by viewers in the 24-54 age group, has been constantly adding informative, entertaining programs to its repertoire of non-fiction series. Expanding this already exhaustive collection, it added ‘The Curse of Civil War Gold’ to its catalog — a show that immediately proved to be a rating hit on History after its release. It is a compelling watch, which follows the quest for the long-lost confederate gold of the Civil War. Produced by Prometheus Entertainment, it features Kevin Burns, Joe Lessard and Kim Sheerin as executive producers for Prometheus and Jennifer Wagman as the executive producer for History.

The first episode of the 6-part season 1 premiered on March 6, 2018, and it concluded with its final episode on April 10, 2018. The immense positive reaction toward the show prompted the producers to renew it for a second installment. A 10-episode season 2 of ‘The Curse of Civil War Gold’ released on April 23, 2019.

The Curse of Civil War Gold Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘The Curse of Civil War Gold’ Season 2 premiered on March 6, 2018 on The History Channel. As far as the next season goes, we don’t have an official announcement yet. Though considering the fact that both the seasons have been received well, we would be surprised if it doesn’t get another season. Our best guess is that if the show does get renewed,  ‘The Curse of Civil War Gold’ Season 3 can release sometime in June 2020. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.

The Curse of Civil War Gold Cast: Who is in it?

‘The Curse of Civil War Gold’ follows Michigan-based Kevin Dykstra in his 8-year mission to find the lost confederate gold of the Civil War. In his quest, he is joined by treasure hunters and ‘The Curse of Oak Island‘ brothers Rick and Marty Lagina. The duo heard about the legend from Kevin and decided to help him in his adventure.

The Curse of Civil War Gold Plot: What is it about?

After receiving compelling evidence, Kevin and his team set out to unravel one of the supposedly greatest conspiracies in US history. They seek to find the rumored hidden gold and treasure that had been smuggled in and stowed away somewhere in their hometown during the US Civil War era, which might be worth millions of dollars. The legend that revolves around this mysterious treasure trove goes somewhat like this:

During the period between 1861 and 1865, Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States. However, with the culmination of the Civil War, Davis began anticipating his imminent defeat and decided to flee to Havana, Cuba. Accompanying him in his journey was his first wife, Varina Anne Davis, soldiers, servants, and probably, millions of dollars of gold.  Rumor has it that he traveled with the entire contents on a carriage, driven by horses. However, unfortunately for Davis, search parties were promptly sent out by the Union Troops and he and his wife were captured in Irwin Country, Georgia on May 10, 1865. Now, as per Kevin’s research and conspiracy theories, the Union men took the valuables for themselves and returned the gold to Michigan.

What’s still not deciphered in this entire event is the treasure’s location. Where did it disappear? Did it get lost or was it deliberately hidden somewhere and dispersed in different places across the state? If the latter scenario is true, the gold can be in anywhere. Maybe, a part of it still lies beneath the waters of Lake Michigan! In fact, there is a theory which suggests that two boxcars, laden with coins, were thrown into Lake Michigan from a ferry, toward the end of the 1880s. A man named George Alexander Abbott even confessed on his deathbed in 1921, about this incident. Apparently, he also revealed the exact location and this information has been passed down from generation to generation in the family. When diver Frederick A. Monroe, a close friend of the family, heard about it, he approached Kevin and decided to join the team in its investigation. Although, this tale is just a rumor, there are chances that it might be actually true. And in this entire show, Kevin hopes that he and his crew can maybe uncover this rumored treasure trove.

Apart from exploring the above stories, ‘The Curse of Civil War Gold’ also tells its viewers about the immense amounts of riches earned by the Union troops after they caught Davis. So, this poses another mystery. Where did they get so much wealth? Was it simply a coincidence or were they successful in smuggling Davis’ gold and then used it for leading a lavish life? Yes, this show might linger on the edges of that fine line between true facts and rumors. On the other hand, the team does find compelling pieces of evidence, which makes us question written history once again. Maybe or maybe not, there’s a bounty of secret gold hidden somewhere. But, this is not the only fact which makes the show so fascinating. Along the way, the crew also makes shocking discoveries of other hidden treasures, which manages to keep the viewer glued to the small screen.
