This dish is the perfect way to satisfy the traditionalists who have to have the marshmallow topping on their sweet potato casserole, yet the streusel adds something extra for those who want to switch things up. If you’ve never had this dish before, I know it might sound strange, but trust me, it totally works! Those toasty-gooey marshmallows really do make the sweet potatoes taste even better. Plus, this is a fun holiday side dish, and nothing says fun like eating marshmallows with your dinner. Some brands of marshmallows will begin melt if they’re in the oven too long. If you want the marshmallows to maintain their shape keep an eye on them. Yams and sweet potatoes are two totally different vegetables, but you can use canned yams and canned sweet potatoes — the ones you can find in U.S. supermarkets, at least — interchangeably. Either one (cut and undrained) will work well in this recipe.
Are canned sweet potatoes and yams the same thing?Yes, all so-called “yams” are in fact sweetpotatoes. Most people think that long, red-skinned sweetpotatoes are yams, but they really are just one of many varieties of sweetpotatoes.
Why do people add marshmallows to sweet potatoes? It's basically a dessert disguised as a side dish
In fact, they're just the right amount of sweet. Not only is nonsensically coating them with a blanket of marshmallows a disservice to an already great and healthy ingredient, but doing so essentially tips the scale from a side dish to a dessert.
What's the difference between yams and sweet potato casserole?African yams are much starchier than sweet potatoes and are closer to the texture of yucca. They taste earthy, a bit like a potato. Sweet potatoes are known for their smooth potato-like texture and sweet flavor.
