My husband and I typically travel between January and March to celebrate our anniversary. But this year since I am not working we are trying to cut down on the cost. We live inKansas City and are looking to go somewhere within 5 hours of the city, so we don't spend the entire trip on a plane. Any suggestions? Show We typically travel to places with some kind of nightlife, but given our limited midwest travel I know that might not be optional. Given that, we are not the type to stay in a room for days on end, we like to get out and explore. However, we are not outdoor adventure type of people, much prefer great cuisine and a little shopping. We are looking to travel on a weekend and not spend over $600 for a couple nights lodging. Any ideas would be appreciated. Report inappropriate content

I would suggest staying at a nice b&b and checking out the wineries. I think it makes for a great romantic weekend. However, I wouldn't say there is great cuisine in Hermann, and not much shopping. There are several really good restaraunts, but nothing 5 star. There is also a little shopping, but mostly just at the wineries, antique stores, and a few small cute little shops. You won't really find much nightlife there either. It sounds like you might be looking for something a little bit more urban. If you do go, in my mind you cant beat Hermann Hill for a b&b. It is a little pricey though and might be slightly out of your budget. There are several other nice b&b's around, but none that I am familiar with. Perhaps someone else can suggest a few. Re: Romantic Weekend Getaway 5 hours from Kansas City 12 years ago Save I thinkEureka Springs would just be within your five hour limit and there are some great drives around the Ozarks. Perhaps stay in Fayetteville, AR which is a University town full of nightlife, restaurants and bars. Eureka Springs is a pretty little town with antique shopping but more of a day trip place if you are looking for nightlife later on. Report inappropriate content

My wife and I had a great weekend there. Seek out a high end B&B. There are nice restaurants and shops. If you have any interest in history, Springfield, Illinois might be a good destination. As the state capital, it has some decent restaurants and nightlife. Or how about St. Louis? There is definitely a good time to be had if you know where to go. As a starting point; stay at the Fleur-de-Lys Mansion B&B, visit Main Street St. Charles one day, Ste. Genvieve wineries the next. If this piques your interest, I can follow with some restaurant suggestions and maybe some activities that suit your specific interests. Are you interested in more fun and trendy or upscale and elegant? Report inappropriate content

We went toEureka Springs a few years back and had a great time. It is actually on our list. St. Louis is also on our list. We did not think of Springfield, but it sounds interesting. We don't need tons of nightlife, but when we go out of town we often find that we stay up a little later and get a little stir crazy staying in a room, so I think your suggestions are perfect. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Report inappropriate content

We've been several times and always have a great time. However, we were just hoping to do something new this time. I think we've settled onSt. Louis, exploring a couple of the neigborhoods that haven't been able to explore before like the Loop and Grand Center. Report inappropriate content

Re: Romantic Weekend Getaway 5 hours from Kansas City 12 years ago Save Mule Skinner Lodge is only a two hour drive away. It is a unique location, and you will have the place to yourselves. It is quite reasonable, and (if you want) they will even prepare your supper for a modest charge. http://www.kansastravel.org/muleskinnerlodge.htm Report inappropriate content

Have fun! For others considering Missouri wine country, we stayed in Hermann (at Alpenhorn Gasthaus) and Rocheport (at Amber House Bed and Breakfast) and enjoyed the beautiful inns and small town atmosphere in both places. In Hermann, for an exquisite gourmet experience, have "Dinner at 8'ish" at Alpenhorn. Kate is a divine chef and Adrian will expertly pair reasonably priced and delicious wines with your dinner. So romantic, and the food is to die for! Dinner in their wine cellar, by candlelight, is something we thoroughly enjoyed and will never forget! We felt so pampered. In Rocheport, try dinner at Les Bourgeois winery at "Blufftop Bistro." The leek tart melts in the mouth and the steak was wonderful. Also, Rocheport's General Store has live bands on the weekend. Lots of people there. Really fun, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Despite reading good reviews, we had a less than stellar experience at Abigail's restaurant in Rocheport. Food was average and server stressed and grouchy. What is the most romantic place for couples?17 of the Most Romantic Places in the World. Paris, France. Couple in front of the Eiffel Tower. ... .
