Jordan Powell barely beat out incumbent Todd Hall in the Republican Pickens County Sheriff primary election. Powell won by 59 votes.

There is no Democratic candidate on the ballot in the Nov. 8 General Election.

Voter turnout in Pickens County was 26.88%.

Here’s a look at what the historic Inflation Reduction Act will achieve:

• Finally allowing Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices
• Placing a cap on seniors’ out-of-pocket prescription drug costs and on Insulin costs
• Lowering health insurance premiums for 13 million people who get insurance through Affordable Care Act exchanges
• Increasing the production of clean energy to combat the climate crisis
• Lowering home energy costs for working families and seniors
• Strengthening tax enforcement by the IRS to crack down on wealthy and corporate tax cheats
• Requiring billion-dollar corporations to pay at least a 15% federal income tax, so they no longer get away with paying a lower tax rate than nurses, firefighters, and teachers
• Accomplishing all of this while not raising taxes on anyone earning less than $400,000 a year or on small businesses

It's recommended that, if at all posssible , you vote in-person during early voting, to avoid the many possible errors built in by the Republicans' SB202 to discourage absentee voting.(Note 1 below)

Note 1: To request an absentee ballot, print and submit this form. You'll need to include your driver's license number, state ID number or, if you don't have those, a copy of acceptable voter ID. Revises OCGA §21-2-381, S.B. 202 §25(a)(1)(C). Date of birth (DOB) also required. Counties cannot mail out ballots until 4 weeks before the election (previously 7 weeks). Revises OCGA §21-2-384, S.B. 202 §27(a)(2).

Note 2: IF YOU ATTEMPT TO VOTE IN THE WRONG PRECINCT on Election Day, S.B. 202 provides that out-of-precinct provisional ballots will not count unless cast after 5 pm and voter signs a statement saying they cannot make it to correct precinct in time. Revises OCGA §21-2-418, S.B. 202 §34. If you vote early ("Advanced (Absentee In-Person) Voting"), this will not be an issue!

Note 3: S.B. 202 provides that

• Counties must count all the ballots nonstop as soon as polls close. Revises OCGA §21-2-493, S.B. 202 §41. (Counties may begin processing absentee ballots as early as two weeks before election day. Revises §21-2-386, S.B. 202 §29(a)(2).)
• Counties must complete count by 5 pm the day after the election or be subject to [State Election Board] sanction. Revises OCGA §21-2-386, S.B. 202 §29(d)
• Certification is Monday after election. OCGA §21-2-493, S.B. 202 §41.

Previously,

• Counties could take breaks counting ballots.
• Counties could count ballots until certification deadline.
• Certification was two Fridays after election

Makeup of the State Election Board is controlled by the Republicans in the General Assembly. Clearly, they hope that the large counties that vote Democratic will be unable to complete their counts in the 22 hours between polls closing at 7:00 p.m. on Election Day and 5:00 p.m. the next day. If the counties fail to do this (or some other "irregularities" are alleged?), the State Election Board then can fire the Boards of Elections and the election supervisors in those counties and substitute their own man to certify the counts—to whose advantage, do you suppose?
