Jeep xj 4.0 turbo kit

98 Cherokee with Claytons 3-link front & 4-link rear cross-member with bellyskid. Custom length arms made due to stretching the front and rear. 14" ORI's on all four corners. Front axle is a HP44 from a 78 F150 with RCV's, REID knuckles, trussed & locked with an Eaton E-Locker. Rear axle is a G2 HP60, trussed & locked with an ARB. Full hybrid cage with front and rear tube fenders/flares that are tied into the overall cage. ARES Fab rear quarter guards. 4.0L engine that's been turbocharged using BoostWerks Engineering turbo manifold, everything else was custom made for the Jeep. T3/T4 Turbo with TIAL wastegate & BOV. Currently running 6psi of boost with a SNOW Performance meth injection kit & Split-Second Performance Piggyback controller. It's been one hell of a labor of love (or hate...somedays), but I like the challenge of making things work that were never intended or engineered to working together. I think that's part of owning an XJ anymore.

Due to individual monitor calibration and other factors when representing color on a computer monitor color accuracy will vary.

FAQs

How long does it take to get a system?

Custom systems will arrive on your doorstep between 2 -3 weeks.

What kind of gas mileage will I get?

You can expect to see about a 10% loss in gas mileage. Depends upon driver.

Does it build boost all of the time?

No. It only builds boost when the motor is loaded.

What models will the turbo fit?

This system will fit 87-03 Jeep Wranglers that are fuel injected with 4.0. It also fits Jeep Cherokee 89-99 with 4.0HO. Requires relocation of battery and some modification of the AC components. Pictures of Cherokee required so I can send the correct brackets.

Will it work with my after market computer chip?

No. The vehicle must have factory computer. NO COMPUTER CHIP!

What kind of gas should I use?

Premium Unleaded - NO EXCEPTIONS!!

Will I have any heating problems?

You may see a 5 to 10 degree increase in coolant temp if your cooling system is marginal. In most cases you won't have any problems.

How long does it take 505 Performance to install system?

If it is scheduled it only will take one day, we usually schedule the vehicle to be left with us for 3 days.

Is this system factory approved?

How to Turbo Charge a 4.0 L Jeep Cherokee Sport XJ?

Hello everyone, I'm new to this website. I'm curious to know about what is required to turbo charge my jeep. I know the obvious stuff like the turbo charger, bov, wastegate, intercooler.

But as far as the computer stuff, and other parts I'm not to sure.

I can't afford to buy a jeep turbo kit, but I live out in the country, and we have tons of junkyards out here. I was thinking of getting a small turbo kit from a saab, or a talon.

This is just a project in mind, but I would like it to make a reality out of it. So I require a bit of guideline. If anyone here has done a home made turbo kit on their Jeep, I would love some info on what was required on your setup.

I'm not looking to make a massive amount of horse power, I was thinking of adding an extra 150 hp on top of what I have now. Something like 5, to 10 psi keeping it safe. It's my daily driver, and the cops could be crude out here in Canada.

If you guys have pictures of your 4.0L turbo I would love some links also. Thank you everyone in advance.

-Alex

hardest part will be finding/fabricating a turbo manifold.

lol. 150hp above stock is a lot of power and will most likely kill your stock motor.
for every 1psi boost you will make ~10 more hp. a safe amount of boost on a stock engine is 8psi or less. this is just a general rule of thumb. some engine can take more or less but for the most part 8psi is a good number most people run reliably

with th 4.0L jeeps you dont need a manifold. just modify the exhaust pipe where it wraps around the front of the motor and bring the pipe up to the top of you engine bay on the pass side. If you want to se how its done look at this web site. 505 Performance I have a 97 wrangler that i turboed based off thier system and the only thing I had to do was buy the piggy back computer from Split Second because I was pushing more than 8lbs of boost. when I was running I was running a stock turbo from an eclipse gsx I never needed to modify the fuel progaming. I only needed to use the piggy back after i changed turbos and got in the higher boost levels, stock HP on the 4.0L avg is about 175 with a T3T4 turbo boosting 22 lbs I dynoed in 3rd gear at 4800rpm - 310 HP @330 ftbs torque, on all stock motor, the only mods were the fuel injectors and piggy back computer. I also did a dyno pull with 100 shot of NOS, same gear and rpm and ran 377HP @ 344 Torque

What year is your jeep? and do you know what country it was built in? Here is a pic of my wrangler.

WOW. good info for sure. What size injectors did you use? And what type of piggy back computer system from Split Second did you get? I found this link. http://www.splitsec.nl/framepage3.htm I don't know which one I would need?

I didnt have to go with bigger injectors untill I changed turbos but when I did I used 26 lb injectors. The Piggy back I used was the FTC1 model from split sec when they sell you a computer they give you a base map to start with. here is the link for the piggy back, Fuel-Timing Calibrators

Is this with all stock internals except injectors? Im am doing the same thing thumpn but im using a small16g turbo and planing to stay under 10psi. Im was planning on upgrading the injectors at the same time I put in the turbo but was planning on useing bigger injectors about 35lbs because as a rule of thumb it is grerally a bad idea to run injectors at over 80% capacity. For my piggyback I was planning on using an AEM system but FTC1 looks good too.

I have installed a turbo on my Jeep Wrangler 4.0 on WOT in 3rd it cuts down looses power on boost 5-PSI it shows Open Loop when this happens. Will a computer tune help this? I reduced the power to my TPS sensor to stop it from going into Open loops seems to work great.

3.73 gear with 33's possibly gearing is too high?

Are you using a stock computer here? You don't want to go into closed loop fueling under boost as this will run way too lean. You definitely want to get it tuned for what the engine needs here, and run open loop under boost.

yea its stock Computer Closed loop i'm 12:1 once it hits Open Loop 14:1 on A/F ratio. This is when it bogs down if I force Open loop from the start it doesn't run very good. timing is around 18deg final either open or closed.

My previous post is wrong. I bought a new A/F meter from AEM and i'm in Open Loop stock O2's unplugged I'm pretty good with A/F 12-14:1 upto around 5psi around 7psi i'm at 17:1 quickly then its off the scale around 9psi then the jeep falls on its face until i let off. I'm running 32lb injectors now, Will the Piggy back help give more fuel in the scenario? I assume that OpenLoop is giving it 100% on the injectors at WOT Im not sure how thumpn is able to do 8psi with no fuel or computer mods.

How much horsepower can a jeep 4.0 handle?

The Jeep's 4.0-liter straight-six engine's maximum of 190 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque made the Jeep famously reliable if a little slow. A custom builder, Newcomer Racing, has now shown that enough boost, as well as forged internals, can turn Jeep's slow 4.0 into a performance powerhouse.

How much does it cost to Turbo a Jeep Cherokee?

Depending on what type of turbo kit you buy and how much installation costs, a Jeep Grand Cherokee XJ turbo kit will cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 or more. Installing a turbo kit for off-roading does have some benefits, including boosting your horsepower by 70-150HP or more.

How much horsepower does a 4.0 inline 6 have?

The 4.0L AMC inline six is known as one of Chrysler's best engines. Dating back to 1986, its torquey 190 hp engine would commonly chug along for upwards of 300,000 miles.
