How to save a picture on a laptop

You don't need any special software to take a picture of your computer screen and save the picture as an image file. You can take a screen shot and save it either by using a key combination on the keyboard by employing the Snipping Tool, installed by default with the Windows 8 operating system.

Key Combination Method

  1. Set up your screen for the screen shot and locate the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard. The key may be labeled as "PrtScn" or "PrtSc." On most laptop keyboards, you must press and hold the "Function" key to activate the "Print Screen" key.

  2. Press "Win-PrtScn" at the same time. If you're using a laptop keyboard, press the "Fn" key, too. If you're using a tablet, press the "Windows" button and the "Volume Down" button simultaneously. The screen dims as the image is captured, and the image is saved to a folder named "Screenshots" in your Pictures Library.

  3. Open File Explorer and navigate to the Screenshots folder. Click the image to open it in the default image viewer.

Snipping Tool Method

  1. Set up your screen for the screen shot

  2. Press "Win-C" to open the Charms menu.

  3. Click the "Search" option and type "Snipping Tool" into the Search box. Click the "Search" icon.

  4. Click the “Snipping Tool” link in the results list to open the tool.

  5. Click the downward-pointing arrow next to the "New" option.

  6. Click "Free-Form Snip" to select and capture a section of your screen with a selection tool. Click "Rectangular Snip" to draw a rectangle around an area of the screen for the shot. Click "Window Snip" to take a screen shot of a designated window. Click "Full-Screen Snip" to take a screen shot of your entire screen. When you choose an option, the corresponding selection controls or dialog box opens.

  7. Select the area of the screen to capture. Once the selection is made, the screen shot is automatically captured.

  8. Click the "Save Snip" option.

  9. Type a name for the image into the "File Name" box, and then select the location where the file should be saved in the "Save In" drop-down box. Click the "Save" button to save the file.

You can copy your photos and videos to your device.
