Times don't include stops for touring, comfort or animal jams. Yes, I have printed that out and have been reading any information I can find about routes on the posts. I was hoping to avoid going the same route fromJackson hole to pray as we are coming from west Yellowstone and was looking for which route might be most scenic. Or maybe it doesn’t matter? Going to GTNP, go on past OF and out the south gate, then, returning plan a very full day and go back north past Lake, Canyon and Roosevelt to Mammoth and out the North entrance. Sic nights in Jackson is a lot of time. I would have put more emphasis on Yellowstone (minimum of 4 nights) and stayed in Grand Teton National Park for the bulk of the time you have for Jackson. Do you have some special plans for your time there? My suggestion would be to spend just 2 nights in Jackson and use the rest of your time in YNP. Have you looked at the map on the YNP website? There's over 300 miles of paved roads - lots to see and explore that would make the extra time worthwhile. Report inappropriate content

We have planned this trip around my father-in-law, who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer and has always wanted to visit Yellowstone and the Tetons. What are are doing is spending four nights in WestYellowstone at the front end of our trip at a VRBO that we have confirmed is close to the park (great advice from the board to check!). To make sure he's comfortable, and because we are taking both sets of grandparents to make this trip special, we hired a tour to drive us around yellowstone for two days. That way, if my father-in-law gets uncomfortable outside, he can rest inside the van, and I can spend time with my parents, husband, and three boys at the various locations within Yellowstone that might require more activity. He wants to see Old Faithful, so our plan is to spend one day doing that, then another in Lamar Valley. We then drive to Jackson Hole, where we are meeting family. We will be there for a longer time--five nights--and during that time we are going to take him on a float trip and I am treating my parents to a fishing trip, because we love to fish together. I was hoping to make each drive unique so that we aren't doubling back on the same route within Yellowstone when we head to Jackson and then to Pray. I really appreciate all of the advice and help on these boards. I have planned most of this trip by reading the posts and I know how much effort must go into answering all of these questions. I always spend more time in the Tetons than Yellowstone and I've been visiting since the early 80s. It's simply special to me and perhaps hard for people to understand - especially those who love Yellowstone but have never visited the Tetons. On my last trip, we spent 5 nights in a private rental (off-season) smack dab in front of the Teton range near Moose and it was truly the most magical trip ever! He can see so much from the van and you don't have to drive far to see and do so much! You can drive around the parks as you go from WestYellowstone to Jackson, but I prefer driving through the park. If you really want to see a different route, we can help you with that. He has probably already seen the movies, but buy for him the following two movies = Shane (an old western) and Spencer's Mountain (with Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara). I first fell in love with the Tetons as a child, from watching those movies. There's a website with driving instructions to drive around the very few Jackson Hole roads to see where the different cabins were located. I HIGHLY recommend Brushbuck's 4 hour tour from Jackson. They will cover the same roads you will have driven (most of them) but they find wildlife that you don't even notice. Using their scopes, you can get great photos even with your smartphone! And we drove down to Gros Ventre campground every morning and afternoon for moose sightings. I was the driver, as soon as the others were up and ready. I have hilarious photos of some still in fleece jammies, along all the other "real" photographers. Two sleepy heads skipped church at the log cabin church (seen in Spencers Mountain) and missed one of the best moose sightings of all. I stayed in the SUV while the other got absolutely fabulous photos. He is going to have a blast! Blessings to you all. Report inappropriate content
