Google authenticator new phone without old phone reddit

The phone I had authenticator on is gone. The backup codes I had saved on my PC for years didn't work.

Can I recover the account u/zymurgist69, or am I a newbie again?

I’m not sure what to do in order to get into my account again. I guess I was supposed to scan a QR code with my old phone when I installed the app in my new phone. The battle.net 2FA didn’t screw me up like that. It still works fine.

Anyways I went back to my google account and re setup 2FA but when I sign into activision with my info and I type in the google authenticator code it don’t work. It locks me out for a few minutes. I also noticed when I go into the authenticator app, it doesn’t show the code is for activision. It just says my e-mail above the code, like its 2FA for my e-mail. Like activision is still hooked up to my old phones google authenticator and not this one.

Luckily I’m still logged in and can play the game fine. I just found all this out because I have a open beta code for MW2 and can’t get into my account now. Which is also going to affect me when the game comes out to log into my activision account from that new game. I no longer have whatever the backup codes are they sent me a long ass time ago to enter into the Authenticator manually.

EDIT: Upon reaching out to activision last night today they got back to me. They re sent my authenticator codes so I could get into my account. I was able to turn off 2FA, then turn it back on and go through the process again with the authenticator on my new phone. When re enabling it, I was given a code to enter into the google authenticator manually. Once it was setup activision emailed me a list of backup codes that I won’t let get lost this time!

Google authenticator new phone without old phone reddit

Ive been wanting to get back into my acc for years now. Neople Support is entirely unhelpful.

I used 2FA with the google authenticator app. I lost my phone, got a new one and am logged into my google account, but the authenticator app is empty. Im finding surprisingly little/unhelpful info on resorting Google Authenticator after losing your phone online, so Im at a loss here. Am i just screwed?

Edit: I'm back in, support has improved a lot!

I use Google Authenticator for 2FA, and twice now I've forgotten to transfer the account before switching phones. Ultimately, that resulted in either a lot of work to get the 2FA removed on a website, or having to create a whole new account. It was something that I really don't want to go through again.

Tip: If you have a second device (tablet, phone etc...) that can run the same authenticator app, you can transfer it now to get ahead of things.

Hopefully this saves at least one person a little bit of heartache.

I got into this predicament earlier today and want to save everyone the trouble I went through.

I broke the screen on my old phone. I went to the mobile store and got a new one no problem. But when I tried to login, it kept trying to do 2FA with my old phone with no other option. The poor guy at the store was no help.

After Googling and even calling into Google One, I was told I'd need to "recover my account" by sending documents proving my identity to Google. I told them I didn't need to recover the account, I just needed to login to a new phone. After an hour of texting with the guy I found a workaround.

On your initial sign in with the new phone, make up an entirely new (and temporary) Google account. That will let you go through the main setup.

Then go into Manage Accounts and add back your old Google account and now 2FA can text you properly and you can get through security.

Hope this helps someone else.
