What is Fruits Basket about?

The anime series was first broadcast in 2001, before being rebooted in 2019. Fruits Basket follows high school student Tohru Honda who is taken in by the Soma family after the loss of her mother. She discovers that almost every member of the family is cursed: 12 of them are possessed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiac.

They each turn into their zodiac animal when they are under stress, weak, embarrassed or hugged by someone of the opposite gender. Tohru promises to keep the Soma family's secret, and their lives are improved by her presence. She sets out to break the curse, encountering vengeful spirits along the way.

In episode 12, Yuki discovers that Machi has called him to ask him to give a gift to Tooru for her. Tooru has protected Yuki, and Machi is incredibly thankful for that. As they speak and the feelings they have for each other begin to surface, Yuki senses the Zodiac connection within him tenses up. He has a vision of the rat and God, and then the curse of the last Zodiac breaks as well. Meanwhile, Shigure meets Akito and gives her a kimono to commemorate the beginning of her life away from her father’s expectations. She later shows up wearing the kimono at the meeting with the former Zodiacs and asks for forgiveness.

Kyou accompanies Tooru as she visits her mother’s grave. Kyou reveals that he has plans to start training at the dojo of his master’s friend. Although this will take him far away, he wants to accumulate experience before he eventually takes over his master’s dojo. Tooru tells him that she will go with him. As they embrace, Kyou looks at Kyoko’s grave and says that he will protect Tooru for life.

The episode ends by depicting the last moments of Kyoko’s life. It is revealed that she didn’t say that she wouldn’t forgive Kyou for not saving her. She actually said that she wouldn’t forgive Kyou if he didn’t protect Tooru. After her death, Kyoko wakes up in the afterlife, and her husband greets her with the words, “You fought well.” In episode 13, it will likely be revealed that while most of the former Zodiacs are willing to forgive Akito, Rin isn’t. Yuki will likely begin attending university, and Machi will probably move in with him.
