Frozen 2 songs lyrics into the unknown

  • "Into the Unknown" is the undeniable show-stopper of Frozen 2, and is already racking up attention from award shows.
  • In the song, Elsa gets hyped for her next big adventure.
  • “For the first time, Elsa gets to say what she wants in the song," Frozen co-writer Robert Lopez told Vanity Fair.

"Let It Go," the showstopper of the enormously popular Disney movie Frozen, was pretty much inescapable in the year 2014. Thanks to the release of Frozen 2 in November, kids across the world are (attempting) to belt another one of Elsa's (Idina Menzel) equally challenging power ballads.

As catchy and complex as "Let it Go," Frozen 2's break-out hit "Into the Unknown" is a reminder of Elsa's emotional depths—and Menzel's chops as a singer who can infuse impossibly high notes with heart.

In addition to achieving cultural ubiquity, "Into the Unknown" is also poised to carry on "Let it Go's" tradition of sweeping awards season. The tune was already nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and is anticipated to get a nod from the Academy, too.

Frozen 2 songs lyrics into the unknown

"Into the Unknown" is one of seven original songs on the Frozen 2 soundtrack, not counting outtakes and instrumentals—but it's the most important when it comes to setting up the movie's plot. Arriving at the start of the movie, "Into the Unknown" spurs Elsa onto another journey (despite her reluctance to go on said journey).

Here's what you need to know about this show-stopper.

Frozen 2 songs lyrics into the unknown

"Into the Unknown" is the quintessential Elsa ballad.

Throughoutthe Frozen movies, Elsa (Idina Menzel) uses songs to excavate deep-seated truths about herself. Elsa's three main ballads—"Let it Go" of Frozen, and "Into the Unknown," and "Show Yourself" of Frozen 2—have a lot in common. For one, Elsa sings her ballads when she's completely alone. A classic introvert, Elsa's mind is most clear when she's by herself.

More importantly, though, the songs demonstrate Elsa's uniquely isolated position. Her icy powers separate her from all the normal folk, including her sister. "I've always been so different/the rules do not apply," Elsa sings in "Show Yourself." She uses songs—conversations with herself—to figure out her place in the world.

If "Let it Go" of Frozen was about embracing her extraordinary abilities, then "Into the Unknown" is about acknowledging that her these abilities come with strings attached. She won't be able to settle into the serene, calm life she wanted. Duty is calling—literally.

The song features a Norwegian pop singer.

Technically, "Into the Unknown" is a dialogue between Elsa and a voice she's hearing from far, far away. At first, she wants to ignore the voice, but can't.

"I can hear you, but I won't / Some look for trouble while others don’t / There’s a thousand reasons I should go about my day / And ignore your whispers which I wish would go away, oh oh oh," the song begins.

Those haunting, high-pitched notes, which reappear throughout the movie, are actually song by Aurora, a 23-year-old Norwegian singer. "My character is not human at all. It's more ancient than humankind and bigger than what people can ever become. Except Elsa," Aurora said in a behind-the-scenes video.

The melody ends up being crucial to solving Frozen 2's central mystery: Who is Elsa, and how did she get her powers?

"Into the Unknown" sets up the plot for Frozen 2.

When the song begins, Elsa is firm in her stance on adventure: She'll be opting out, thanks for asking. After enduring the dangerous hijinks of Frozen, Elsa would rather sit back and enjoy the hard-won kingdom of Arendelle, land of quaint streets and cozy castles.

With that in mind, Elsa tries to swat away the voice, as if it were a nuisance—or a product of her imagination. "You’re not a voice / You’re just a ringing in my ear / And if I heard you, which I don’t / I’m spoken for I fear," she sings.

She concludes that risking her stable life for the pull of the unknown, is, well, ridiculous.

"Everyone I’ve ever loved is here within these walls / I’m sorry, secret siren, but I’m blocking out your calls / I’ve had my adventure, I don’t need something new / I’m afraid of what I’m risking if I follow you," Elsa sings.

As the song continues, though, Elsa identifies the crux of her situation: She feels comfortable in Arendelle, but not fulfilled. There's a part of her that's still unexplored. The mysterious voice may lead the way to a solution.

By the end of the song, Elsa has reversed her position entirely. Now, she wants to follow the voice, and is almost lonely when it fades away. She longs for the feeling of being understood, even if it's by a mysterious entity. The voice acknowledges something only she admits to herself: She's bigger than the life she currently lives. "Where are you going? / Don’t leave me alone / How do I follow you / Into the unknown?"

So begins the tangled and surprisingly complicated plot of Frozen 2. And whatever happens, Elsa knows she can handle it. “Even though she doesn't know what's out there, she knows that it's something that she needs to go toward, that she's not afraid of,” Menzel told USA Today.

"Into the Unknown" incorporates Norwegian culture.

Frozen is influenced by Norwegian culture in ways both obvious (the setting) and subtle (the musical influences in "Into the Unknown"). The song's motif–"ah ah oh oh oh"—is inspired by a kulning, or an ancient Scandinavian herdingsong.

Jonna Jinton, a 26-year-old Swede with a YouTube channel devoted to the practice, explains that the singing technique "was used by women a long time ago to call home the cattle back home to the farm in the evenings." The high-pitched noises were also used to communicate across long distances—just like in Frozen 2.

Panic! At the Disco covered "Into the Unknown."

This isn't the band's first foray into musical theater. Panic! At the Disco also covered "The Greatest Show" on The Greatest Showman cover soundtrack.

Hopefully, Frozen 3 will come out and give us at least one more Elsa ballad. But until then, we have many "Into the Unknown" lip sync sessions in our future.

Ah ah oh oh oh
Ah ah oh oh oh oh oh oh

I can hear you but I won’t
Some look for trouble while others don’t
There’s a thousand reasons I should go about my day
And ignore your whispers which I wish would go away, oh oh oh
Ah ah oh oh
Oh oh
Ah ah oh oh

You’re not a voice
You’re just a ringing in my ear
And if I heard you, which I don’t
I’m spoken for I fear
Everyone I’ve ever loved is here within these walls
I’m sorry, secret siren, but I’m blocking out your calls
I’ve had my adventure, I don’t need something new
I’m afraid of what I’m risking if I follow you

Into the unknown
Into the unknown
Into the unknown
Ah ah oh oh
Ah ah oh oh oh oh

What do you want? ‘Cause you’ve been keeping me awake
Are you here to distract me so I make a big mistake?
Or are you someone out there who’s a little bit like me?
Who knows deep down I’m not where I’m meant to be?

Every day’s a little harder as I feel my power grow
Don’t you know there’s part of me that longs to go…

Into the unknown?
Into the unknown
Into the unknown
Ah ah oh oh
Ah ah oh oh

Oh oh oh
Are you out there?
Do you know me?
Can you feel me?
Can you show me?
Ah ah oh oh
Ah ah oh oh
Ah ah oh oh
Ah ah oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh

Where are you going?
Don’t leave me alone
How do I follow you
Into the unknown?
Oh oh oh
