But there's a catch. The powder isn't doing any good if you're using it the wrong way—and a lot of people are. We consulted with some of the top makeup artists in the business to discover the biggest mistakes you're making with setting powder.

Not knowing the differences between powders. Yes, there are four different kinds of powders. "I think a lot of people don't know the difference between powder products and what they are meant to do, says Beau Nelson, who works with Kristen Stewart and Katy Perry. "Mineral powders are meant to actually replace medium-coverage foundation. I don't generally recommend covering foundation with mineral powders unless you're going for a full-coverage look, since it tends to cake up when applied over foundation. When it comes to loose setting powders, they come in two forms: translucent and colored. Colored works to correct tone, brighten the face, and correct redness. Translucent powders are probably the safest bet since they don't change the color of the foundation and don't add coverage. Pressed powders add slightly more coverage than loose ones because they contain binders, and they can add a polished look to the skin when applied with a buffing motion to the face,"
