Orthodontic braces are appliances used to straighten teeth, correct alignment and help position a person's bite, while also aiming to improve dental health.

There are many different kinds of orthodontic appliances used at Northenden House including metal, ceramic and lingual braces, and also Invisalign aligners. The metal brackets are typically made using stainless steel, while ceramic braces are made of ceramic, porcelain, or in some cases plastic. The modern wires used in braces are made from stainless steel, nickel titanium and copper. Clear aligners (such as Invisalign) are made out of polypropylene plastic.

Can braces break?

Yes, but only rarely. If not taken care of properly, braces can bend or break, delaying treatment for the patient. Common reasons why braces break include: eating foods such as hard sweets or sticky foods, that you shouldn't be eating with braces.

So here comes the big question: Is it okay to eat chocolate when wearing braces?

Yes, chocolate is perfectly fine for braces as long as you’re eating the right kind. Any type of soft chocolate, from a chocolate bar to a peanut butter cup is going to be perfectly okay for you to eat. It’s when chocolate is frozen, chewy or brittle that it can become hard and difficult to bite into, potentially damaging your teeth and braces.  We would only advise that chocolate is eaten at a meal time and not as a snack so to reduce the risk of damaging your teeth.

  • Chocolate (without caramel or nuts)
  • Peanut butter cups
  • KitKats
  • 3 Musketeers
  • Marshmallows

Be mindful, that in excess, candy of any kind can accumulate around your braces and lead to permanent white marks (decalcification), cavities or gum disease (gingivitis). Make sure to brush thoroughly around your braces especially after indulging in sugary snacks!

No need to miss out on the trick-or-treating fun but enjoy candy in moderation and snack wisely! If you do find a bracket not attached to the tooth, call your orthodontist as soon as possible to make an appointment to repair the loose bracket so your treatment is not delayed.
