Q: Who wrote at the cross hymn?

Glory to His Name (also called Down At The Cross) is a hymn written by Elisha A. Hoffman in 1878. It is thought that Hoffman was reading about the crucifixion of Jesus in the Bible and began to think about how God saved men from their sins by allowing Jesus to die on the cross.

Alas! and did my Saviour bleed wordt op een heel scala aan diverse melodieën gezongen.

Als strofelied wordt het in de Engelse kerkmuzikale traditie doorgaans gezongen op de melodie Martyrdom, die op naam staat van Hugh Wilson (1766-1824) (zie voor details hymnary.org en Chris Fenner, via Externe links beneden).

De Amerikaanse evangelie-liederen traditie geeft het meestal als refrein-lied, waarbij het refrein gelijk de titel bepaalt.
Dominant werd daar eerst een melodie van Asa Hull (1828-1907), waarbij de titel doorgaans Remember Me wordt. Die melodie was al in 1869 gebruikt voor een ander lied (We’re Traveling Home) en is door Hull zelf bemiddeld naar Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos (vanaf 1874) en de Gospel Hymns (1876, Gospel Hymns No. 2, nr. 35 als ‘Remember Me’). De tekst van het refrein is waarschijnlijk van Hull, in ieder geval niet van Watts.
Later kwam een andere melodie op van Ralph Hudson (1843-1901), waarbij de titel doorgaans wijzigt in At the Cross. Hudson voegt er een refrein bij dat naar alle waarschijnlijkheid al een eigen leven had, op een melodie van John Hill Hewitt (1801–1890) (Take me Home) (zie voor details hierover Chris Fenner).

De gedachte van Chris Fenner over het eigen leven van het refrein bij Hudson wordt bevestigd door de zelfstandige vertaling ervan door Meier Salomon Bromet: Bij het kruis, bij het kruis daar bescheen mij het licht en door het eveneens voorkomen van dit refrein bij I’m not ashamed to own my Lord.

C.S. Adama van Scheltema leverde een eigen lied dat zich op de Remember Me versie oriënteert: Mijn Heiland, die voor mij uw bloed.

What is this? Later versions have changed the objectionable lyrics “for such a worm as I” to “for sinners such as I?” Because nobody in this day and age of promoting self esteem and positive self images really gets off on being called a worm.
