2022 mitsubishi outlander parking brake service required

Franklin, TN – January 15, 2021 – Mitsubishi Corporation (NASDAQ:MSBHF) has recalled 21,758 vehicles, due to corrosion in the parking brake system. The parking brakes may not operate correctly, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall includes 2016  Mitsubishi Outlander and 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vehicles.

Recall summary

The parking brake system prevents the car from rolling away when parked on a hill by engaging rear brakes, which lock the rear wheels of a car in place.

Due to a supplier assembly error, the rear brakes of these cars may lack a rust prevention coating. Without that coating, water may penetrate the brake system and corrode it. As a result, the parking brake may fail and not keep the car from rolling away.

Risks

If the driver believes that the parking brake is set and the brake malfunctions, the vehicle may roll into traffic, hit another parked vehicle or injure a pedestrian. This is particularly dangerous if the vehicle is parked on an incline.

Other Mitsubishi Outlander recalls

Outlander and Outlander Sport cars are subject to several recent recalls.  Both cars, for example, were among the ones recalled back in the summer for improperly designed seat belts. They are also subject to a May recall due to a part of the suspension detaching due to corrosion.

The repair

To fix the issue, dealers will need to replace the rear brake caliper assemblies. The repair is free of charge. Mitsubishi expects the recall to begin January 25, 2021.

So I set my 2019 outlander electronic park brake into service mode by following instructions off of YouTube and now it won’t come out of service mode. Brakes are done, the car goes but the parking brake service required light is on and beeping. How can I reset it?

Are you sure it went into service mode?

All that you need to do is operate the handbrake switch. This will put it back into operating mode.

Were the pistons hard to push back?

After i tried putting it in service mode I still couldn’t get the pistons to release so I disconnected the battery, hooked up a battery charger to the caliper and released it that way.

Were the pistons hard to push back?

No. I reversed the motors and manually pressed the pistons in.

You will need to get the Fault code read, and see if they can activate " full release control -on" and then "full release control - off"

But i suspect you might have damaged the motors

Well the motors functioned smoothly in forward and reverse with another power source when I was done.

There’s also a auto hold button. But when I press that it says auto hold not available.

That is why i am saying you need to get the codes read. It could be the potentiometer inside is confused, so activating full release control may work.

Probably was, but like most forum users, you dont get any feedback to say whether id did work or not, which doesnt really help other users.

Same issue here. Anyone find the solution to this problem? I can't find an OBD2 scanner with EPB reset that supports Mitsubishi. I'm thinking I will have to bring my care to the dealer to fix it.

So, I brought it to the dealer and they told me the alarm was on because the brake pads were too low (I left the old ones in because I bought pads for manual park brake by accident). I went home and installed new rear brake pads and the same alarm is active. I just ordered the BlueDriver Bluetooth OBDII scanner to see if it will solve the problem. It's cheaper than going back to the dealer and I could return it if it doesn't solve the issue

A bluetooth device will not work. You need a bi directional tool to retract the pistons. These are more expensive than these cheap code readers

Thanks for replying, I was able to cancel my order before it shipped. I'm looking for a tool that has that function, but it's difficult. The MUT3 tool seems dated and confusing to use. I'd pay a chunk of change for something rather than paying $140/hr for service at the dealer. If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it!

if you pushed back the pistons before putting in service mode you have wrecked the rear calipers.

The alarm showed up before I touched the pistons, then I took it to the dealer, then I pushed them back before changing the pads. I'm really hoping they aren't damaged

So I brought the car back in instead of buying a scanner. They scanned the car for codes, saw the rear brakes had malfunctioned and took a closer look at the brakes. They found that the piston boot wasn't on properly, so after they adjusted it and put everything back together, they cleared the code and ran an actuator test. EPB wasn't broke thankfully and the cars back to normal.

I reached out to a couple brands of scanners and the only company that got back to me with a recommendation was Autel. They recommended the MS906 ($1000+ on amazon) if anyone is curious.

How much did they charge you to do the job? Was it at the dealer or another workshop?

What does it mean when it says parking brake service required?

Your parking brake lever/pedal needs adjusting. Your brake pads are worn down and need to be replaced. Your hydraulics are amiss and likely losing pressure/fluid.
