Hi. I am about to replace my Camshaft Position Sensors, and I see them next to each other on top of the engine near cylinder 1, one black and one gray for intake and exhaust, however... I was searching youtube and some of the owners say that the exhaust position sensor is behind the engine, next to the firewall which is now confusing me as to which one is the real camshaft exhaust sensor, or is there actually 1 intake and 2 exhaust sensors?

So I though it was just 1 intake and 1 exhaust camshaft sensors just like on this first video:

Until I saw second video and others pointing to a different exhaust camshaft sensor

Please enlighten me. Thank you.

I think this is terminology confusion again.

The Intake and Exhaust Camshaft Actuator Solenoid Valves are the two shown in the first video. People throw "Position" into the name, causing confusion. These are NOT "position" sensors; they are oil control valves! You pull the cover(s) off and there they are right on top, plugged into the top of the engine. I just changed one of those on my (now deceased) father's 2008 Malibu with the 2.4L engine. It was like a $40 OEM part via Amazon.

The Camshaft position sensors are something else. I'm not near my manuals, but I think the position sensors have to be near the intake and exhaust sprockets/gears ... which puts them on the *front* of the engine. Not sure exactly *what* the guy in the 2nd video is doing. It *may* be where the "position" sensor is on the 2.4L, I don't know, but it looks like he's on the *back* end of the engine ...

Which Check Engine code do you have?

OK, so the 2 on top of the engine, the straight ones as you said are the intake and exhaust camshaft solenoids. The one behind the engine near the firewall, is the camshaft sensor, it is L-shaped. I have already ordered the parts. Thank you!

The ones you mention with the Gray and Black tops are the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valves.. Really, solenoid operated oil flow control valves that then route oil to the front sprocket/phaser assembly on the Intake and Exhaust camshafts. Those are what actually do the rotational advance or retard camshaft timing.

The Camshaft Sensors are on the opposite end of the engine .. . one each for the intake or exhaust camshaft and are the same part number and can be swapped one for the other unlike the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoids.

UPDATE. It is fixed now. I replaced both intake and exhaust camshaft sensors, solenoids, and the crankshaft sensor, but still stalled and produced the p0017 code. I then found that the timing chain jumped 1 tooth, so I decided to just replace the timing chain myself, which still didn't fix the code and the stall. I then replaced the only other part that could've caused that code, which was the exhaust VVT Sprocket/ Cam Sprocket, and that cured the p0017 error. It still stalled though, and this time I got a p0134 code, so I replaced the o2 sensor and that fixed the stalling. I am also getting a lot better gas mileage (24-28mpg average vs 19-21 before)

I decided to replace the leaking AC condenser as well.

When you replaced the chain, did you replace anything else in there - like the tensioners (or the plastic guides)?

Yes, the chain kit came with the plastic guides which I also replaced. I thought that was it, but then I still got a p0017 and my obd reader live data showed that the exhaust cam timing was always at 0degrees, no matter what the rpm was. So I had to remove the chain again and replace the exhaust VVT phaser. That fixed the p0017 code and I saw the exhaust cam timing now varies from 0-12degrees.

However, it was still stalling with a code p0134, which was fixed by replacing the pre-cat o2 sensor. Everything is fixed now, no more stalling.

It's weird that an o2 sensor was causing the stall. I think it was connecting/ disconnecting constantly and confusing the computer on whether to use the default air/fuel mixture setting or to calculate using the sensor's input..thus causing my engine to shake like a go-go dancer and eventually stall. I think that also caused my timing chain to jump and damage the exhaust phaser internal springs.

also replaced the tensioners on both timing and balance chains (I also replaced the balance chain), which was probably weak already, if violent engine shake caused the timing chain to jump.

Is camshaft sensor B intake or exhaust?

The camshaft position sensor notes the rate at which the camshaft is spinning, and helps the car's computer control things like fuel injection and engine timing. Note that the “B” means that this sensor is located in the exhaust side of the cylinder head.

What is exhaust camshaft position sensor?

The camshaft position sensor (CPS) lets the fuel injectors know when to fire, also controlling the ignition system timing and other crucial engine frameworks. Sometimes these sensors or your exhaust system fail and need replacement or repair, and Wrench can help.
