Choosing or Changing Beneficiaries

If you enroll in UNM’s AD&D insurance, there is an important step to ensure you’re making the most of this important coverage – choosing or updating a beneficiary. A beneficiary is the person who will receive the proceeds of your AD&D insurance should you pass away due to an accidental injury. You can choose anyone as your beneficiary and change your designation at any time. And when you add or change a beneficiary online, your designation becomes effective immediately.

Examples of when to consider your beneficiary designation(s) are marriage, birth or adoption of a child, or divorce.

You can change your beneficiaries at any time. If no beneficiary is named or if your beneficiary is no longer living, any benefits will be paid to your survivors in the following order:

  • Surviving legal spouse or surviving domestic partner; or, if none,
  • Surviving children, on an equal-share basis; or, if none,
  • Surviving parents on an equal-share basis; or, if none,
  • Surviving siblings; or, if none,
  • The member's estate.

If a family member is covered by AD&D, you are automatically named the beneficiary. You can change this online or by submitting form UBEN 119 (Designation of Alternate Beneficiary).

What is the difference between accidental death and life insurance?

What is accidental death and personal loss?

Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance is an insurance policy that pays a death benefit upon the accidental death of an insured or upon the loss of a limb due to an accident. AD&D is purposed to serve as a supplement to regular life insurance as coverage is limited to certain types of accidents.
