Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion gave Jimmy Fallon the gift of appearing on his very 2021 COVID pandemic-appropriate Christmas song “It Was A... (Masked Christmas),” which came out last night during his show. Fallon explained that it was Grande who suggested Megan do the rap portion of the song. The three really went all out shooting the music video for it, which you can watch below.

Of the song’s meaning, Fallon said on The Tonight Show, “It’s basically about how last year was just rough on everybody. I wanted to say ‘it’s going to get better. It really is going to get better, trust me,’ and how can I portray that? And also think about what funny things have happened while we were in lockdown, like putting Purell on everything or going on a Zoom, Zooming your grandpa and grandma and seeing where the Wi-Fi works best. So I write this song.”

Grande was the dream singer to do it, and after Fallon and his team approached her, she eventually texted Fallon and said, “Jimmy, I love the song. I’m in.” Megan, when asked to do the song, was just as enthusiastic, texting back, per Fallon, “I can do a song with my besties Ariana and Jimmy? I’m in. When do we shoot the video?”

The video itself is a treat, from everyone’s over-the-top holiday looks to Megan wearing vaccine needles as nails.
