If your registration has expired for two years or longer, you will need to get new license plates for the vehicle. In that case, you will need to:
- Make an appointment at a DMV office.
- Provide license plate number or registration document for your expired vehicle.
- Present your Connecticut driver's license.
- Complete application for Registration and Certificate of Title (Form H-13B).
- Provide current Connecticut insurance identification card.
- Ensure your vehicle has met emissions testing requirements and has no outstanding compliance issues.

Step 1: Gather what you’ll need:
- The Personal Identification Number (PIN) on your renewal notice, or
- First and last names as it appears on your license or ID card
- CT driver’s License or non-driver ID number
- Date of birth
- If you’re an organization, you will need your Secretary of State Number*
Step 2: Have your printer ready:
Please have your printer ready before starting. Once you finish your registration renewal, you’ll need to print it out and keep it in your vehicle. Reprint your receipt.

An invitation to renew your registration will be automatically mailed to you 45 days before the expiration date.
You can’t renew through mail if you have the below scenarios.
- You have any outstanding property tax obligations.
- Your vehicle requires additional documents and will continue to be processed by mail. This includes no fee renewals.
- There is a discrepancy with the make or vehicle type on your renewal notice.
