Cooking fresh hash browns in air fryer

These air fryer hash browns are a snap to make. Whether you like the restaurant style shredded potatoes, or you prefer crispy fast food style patties, you'll love how easy and quick these cook up. Breakfast has never been this good!

For those who are unfamiliar with air frying, it's a quick and easy way to cook food using hot air instead of oil. This method produces a golden-brown crust on the outside while keeping the inside moist and fluffy.

Why this recipe works

Super easy - these air fryer hash browns could not be easier to make! Just a few simple steps and you'll have delicious, crispy hash browns in no time. These hash browns are entirely cooked through and ready to eat within 10-25 minutes!

Delicious - the combination of crispy potatoes with salt and pepper is absolutely delicious! Comfort food everyone loves.

Less grease - these hash browns are made with oil, but there is no deep-frying involved! You can control how much fat you would like to use (or not use), and the end result is perfectly crispy without extra grease.

Kid-friendly - kids love crispy, crunchy potatoes! If your kids are looking for a side to go with their breakfast, these air fryer hash browns can make their day!

Easy clean-up - the best part about this recipe is that there is minimal clean-up involved. You can use cooking spray to eliminate any leftover stuck-on food particles in your air fryer. And you can throw your air fryer parts in the dishwasher when finished!

Versatile - serve the air fried hash browns as a side dish for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You can even have them for a snack. Why not?

Ingredients

Hash Browns - I used a package of shredded frozen hash browns, frozen hash brown patties, and a package of Simply Potatoes refrigerated, shredded potatoes.

Cooking spray/oil - oil is optional if you're trying to cut down on fat and calories, however cooking spray will help keep the hash browns from drying out too much.

I do like to use oil for added flavor and texture. Mild flavored oils with a high smoke point work best, such as avocado oil, corn oil, vegetable oil, and canola oil are a few examples.

Top tips

I use the Cosori XL for all my air fryer recipes. It's perfect for 4 to 6 people. You may also like this one that's also a toaster oven, or this smaller one from Dash perfect for 2 people.

For Fresh and Frozen Shredded Hash Browns:

  • Taste at the halfway point to decide how much salt you need.
  • Spread in an even layer.
  • No need to flip over unless desired.
  • Add other seasonings like garlic powder, cayenne pepper, or paprika.
  • Always check your hash browns and adjust cooking time as needed.

For Frozen Patties:
Frozen patties are already fried, so there may not be a need to add any cooking spray, especially if your basket is non-stick.

Storage and reheating

Store any leftover hash browns in an airtight container immediately after eating. They will last in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Reheat in the microwave until warmed through. Or if you prefer crispier leftovers, use your skillet or air fryer on medium heat with a little oil or cooking spray.

You can freeze leftover hash browns in a freezer storage zip top bag or other air tight container for about 3 months.

To reheat from frozen:

Microwave on low power or defrost to loosen hash browns. Continue to heat in the microwave until heated, or heat in the air fryer or skillet with a little oil or cooking spray. Use a medium heat until heated though.

Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (194ºC). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil. Carefully place the hash browns in a single layer inside the air fryer basket, leaving a little space between each one. Close the air fryer and cook for 10 minutes.

Can you use fresh hashbrowns instead of frozen?

You can use fresh potatoes instead of frozen hash browns if you would like. You'll need to shred the potatoes to be like hash browns, then put the shreds in a bowl of cold water. Then you'll stir, drain, add more water and repeat a few times to remove the starch from the potatoes.

What temperature do I air fry hash browns at?

Make sure that your air fryer is set to 370 degrees F. Place your frozen hash browns in the air fryer basket and cook for 18 minutes. Then, use a spatula to divide your potatoes into smaller sections so that you can flip them. Cook for 5 more minutes, or until desired crispiness!

How do you cook Southern hash browns in the Airfryer?

Preheat air fryer to 400 degrees. Place hash brown patties in one layer inside your air fryer and cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Remove the hash browns from the air fryer and wait 2 minutes to allow them to cool slightly, then enjoy!
