A vacant lot near the corner of Seneca and West 31st Street South is poised to become one of the city's latest planned car washes as part of a national brand's entry into the Wichita market.
On Thursday, the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission approved a request for a conditional use to permit an automated car wash — Take 5 Car Wash — on land at 3028 S. Seneca that is zoned as limited commercial.
MAPC documents list Wichita-based Via Fone Inc. as the owner of the property, which is between a MedExpress and a commercial strip development.
Take 5 Car Wash is owned by Charlotte-based Driven Brands Holdings Inc., a company with plans — that include Wichita — for growth nationwide.
A Take 5 is already under construction at the southwest corner of Maize Road and West 29th Street North, and Driven Brands told WBJ on Friday that a third location is planned for 2110 N. Webb Road.
It is also planning to build a car wash in Augusta at 511 W. 7th Ave.
The moves add to a Wichita market that has already seen Club Car Wash and Tommy's Express Car Wash expand footprints in recent years to go alongside Zips and Charlie's Car Wash.
Driven Brands is the largest automotive services company in North America and is the parent company of Meineke Car Care Centers and Maaco. It acquired the Take 5 brand and entered the car wash business in 2020 when it bought International Car Wash Group, which owned several other car wash brands.
The company said plans are in motion — beyond car washes — for Take 5 Oil Change locations in Wichita, Topeka and other spots.
Take 5 touts its convenience and says its 350 car wash locations in the U.S. make it the largest express car wash operator by unit count.
CEO Jonathan Fitzpatrick said in February that Driven Brands would not slow down in the segment.
“In 2022, we will remain acquisitive with car wash, and we'll supplement that with at least 45 greenfield locations,” Fitzpatrick told analysts on an earnings conference call.
