About the Department of Emergency Medicine
- Our Emergency Department is staffed by over 150 board-certified, attending physicians who are on faculty at Harvard Medical School and are academically focused on both scientific and administrative/leadership and research.
- Our Emergency Department is also home to the Harvard-affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency (HAEMR) program, a highly-rated and competitive three-year residency program with a total of 39 residents (13 per year), who have been selected from over 1,000 annual applicants.
- The Department also manages 6 affiliated hospital emergency departments and 2 urgent care centers and oversees over 180,000 ED patient visits per year.
- The Emergency Department at BIDMC has also developed uniform clinical practices, quality systems, and transfer protocols to ensure excellent patient care throughout the network.

The BIDMC Emergency Department, the hub of our operations, is a level 1 trauma center serving the Boston metropolitan area. BIDMC is a 595-bed acute care hospital and the emergency department treats over 55,000 patients a year. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to meet the needs of a high-volume, acutely injured or ill patient population.
The ED is staffed by over 50 specialty trained, board-certified physicians with expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide spectrum of acutely injured or ill patients. An on-site, integrated radiology suite and round-the-clock laboratory services are available to assist with every emergency need. Staff members are also involved in research, toxicology, public policy, disaster planning, residency training, prehospital care and international emergency medicine. Medical coverage in the ED is provided by 'layered attending physician staffing' with as many as 4 attending physicians on at one time.

In recent years, the department has led emergency medicine education projects in countries such as Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Qatar, Belgium, Armenia, Russia, Turkey and more.
Our HMFP Emergency Medicine department assembles specific project teams to work with our international partners, drawing on senior faculty and academic leadership from Harvard Medical School and, clinical experts, and leaders from within our expansive clinical network. With years of experience advising and guiding our partners, our faculty understands the complexities of adapting evidence-based best practices to local circumstances in order to optimize health and educational outcomes.

The ED has single physician coverage and mid-level provider coverage during peak periods. The Beth Israel Deaconess Milton Hospital ED is staffed and managed by our team of Harvard faculty, attending physicians from BIDMC Boston.
ED physicians are experts in treating critically ill patients and managing trauma. They are supported by emergency nurses dedicated to delivering high quality care. All Emergency Department nurses have earned and maintain specialized credentials that enable them to care for all types of emergency patients. These include advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), trauma nurse core course, and advanced training in the care of pediatric patients and their emergencies.

The Sykes Emergency Department (ED) at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth treats more than 47,000 patients each year. Specialty-trained, board-certified physicians and emergency nursing staff have the expertise to diagnose and treat a wide spectrum of injured or ill patients.
The BID-Plymouth ED is staffed with physicians who have been trained at some of the best emergency medicine residency programs in the country. They have expertise in ultrasound, trauma, airway management, EMS, prehospital care, disaster medicine and more.
BID-Plymouth ED nurses are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) providers and many have advanced training in pediatrics and trauma.
The BID-Plymouth ED offers groundbreaking therapy for treating acute heart attack (primary angioplasty program) and stroke. These leading-edge therapies offer patients new hope for promising outcomes, and improved long-term prognoses. The ED also has access to a TeleNet Stroke service and an integrated radiology suite and laboratory services.
